NYT: HP-Apple represents major shift in industry

HP-Apple changes industry

HP says it will work on between the Apple and Microsoft worlds, following yesterday's HP-Apple agreement, which "points to a major realignment of forces within the computer industry....The agreement - which was completed only after an extensive bargaining session that ran long into Wednesday night between HP's Fiorina and Jobs - represents a significant departure for both companies. For the first time, Mr. Jobs has stepped away from the self-enclosed Apple-only strategy he has pursued since he returned to run the company in 1997," according to the NYT.

While both Dell and Microsoft took opportunities to say the agreement would hurt customers, HP said that it was probably better positioned than any other company: ""Customers want all this to work together and they want a seamless approach. We're very much going to make sure that the Microsoft and Apple worlds work together. That's part of the power we bring to this thing."

They forgot one thing

HP made many of Apple's printers in the early and mid-90s. Before that it was Canon. They are just one big happy family.

I think this is Great!

A good (Windows) partner in (anti)crime is something that can really help Apple. It can also help HP provide it's customers with great ease of use solutions like we have already. ++

"Windows is about choice, you can mix and match all of this stuff," said David Fester, general manager of Microsoft's Windows digital media division. "We believe you should have the same choice when it comes to music services."

He said that Hewlett would end up confusing its customers because the company has supported several other Microsoft media products that are not compatible with the iPod, including its Windows Media Center software, which Microsoft sees as the crucial digital hub in the home.

So Microsoft is all for choice, just the choice has to be Microsoft? It's going to confuse customers because they have both iTunes and WMC on their systems now?

That sounds scarily something like what the n**** would say to anyone to sway them to becoming a good little n***. We are in favor of choice, as long as you choose to be a good little n***. Ya, ya, ya-volt!, unt ve only vont you to have a choice. Ve don't vant you getting confuzed. Indeed, I for one of many am sick and tired of the dominance of Microsoft on sheer brawn alone and bully business practices. I love using my Mac, and it shows in my conversations with my friends who are stuck in the Microsoft world of computing. It is strange now though, as they look at me and don't understand how satisfied I can be by switching to Apple. They really, just don't get it.

OS X on Itanium?

Apple has internal builds on x86, a large market, manufacturer with consistant product control to avoid the white box driver nightmare. Server version would port well. They could realistically release a 85%-95% system, on those boxes. Eeeewww creeeepy�

Its a nice feather in Apple's cap, but I'm so pissed at Carly Fiorina's cavalier attitude about shipping jobs overseas that I won't buy anything HP until she apologizes, or leaves HP.

Sigh, we'll almost never see Mac OS X ship for use on just anyone's x86 system for several reasons.
1) Application developers would have to rewrite, or at least recompile, their applications to run on an x86 system.

And, more importantly...
2) Apple is a hardware company, so while Apple might move to x86 based systems, they'll limit Mac OS X to being used on their hardware through the use of ROM-verification

No love lost between...

...HP and Microsoft. Don't forget that Compaq was the company that complained to the Feds when Microsoft threatened to cut them off from Windows if they included Netscape on their PeeCees. That complaint began the investigation which lead to the lengthy trial and monopoly ruling.

And Mike Dell's player will have as little effect on Apple as his handheld has had on Palm.

She said some crappy things, but it would be a mistake to single her out. The rest of the industry feels the same way, they're just not stupid enough to say it in front of a reporter.

This started before the jobs started going overseas. The politicians are constantly railing against the illegal immigrants coming in through Mexico. But when no one was looking, the tech lobby was claiming that there weren't enough workers in this country, and the government started handing out visas to lower-priced foreign tech workers, who got jobs that Americans actually wanted. Once that started happening, it was only a matter of before those millionaire and billionaire execs figured, hey why bring in the cheap labor, let's just send the whole operation over to them.

Well, you know what, I was never worried about losing my opportunity to work in a sweatshop or lettuce field to an illegal alien. What the government allowed to happen legally is a bigger problem.

I don't blame anyone who's just trying to make a living, whether it be the IT guy in India or the illegal immigrant cleaning someone's house. They are just taking advantage of the fact that corporate America and the corporate friendly government by-and-large don't give a rat's a** about individual Americans.

Oh well, one of these days the foreign workers will figure out that they don't need the American executives and overpaid CEOs, forge their own industries, and America will have pissed away it's leadership in the world. Then those foreign companies will come back, and probably give us better jobs. :P

Aww, the two Silicon Valley companies that both started in someone's garage, teaming up. Cute. Still, Apple must come up with a larger home entertainment strategy (read: they're working on it). M$ is already spreadin' the FUD about their upcoming Windows 2004 Home Edition (read: vaporware), which will supposedly converge with your TV, stereo, etc.

I do think you are on to something here with the home entertainment strategy. Apple can have this cake and eat it too with HP doing the home entertainment market while incorporating the iPod;iTunes; etc., and keep their own customer base happy by making great computers that just work. I know that was cliche, but it is the truth. Ok, then, this makes great sense in the scheme of things. I have to hand it to Steve Jobs for making some really great decisions! We're not worthy! We're not worthy!.

oversea

I think people foorgot why the PCgetting cheap. The salary in the US is so expensive compare to oversea, the entire PC industry (and many other industries) shift to oversea workers for reasons. This strategy work as a short term because it really cut down the cost and increase competitiveness in prices, but hurt everything else in the long term.

With that in mind, we see the industry do not have innovation, not invest into R&D, and see making new and high quality produts as hassles. That is where Apple become so different. They dare to make new things, they dare to make mistakes, and that's how they move forward. That is the spirit of innovation. Apple do have oversea assemble lines, but all that are in production, and they still manage to keep part of the hardware development and manufaturing in the US.

So Windows is not compatible now? Sorry Bill, the world do not neccessarily revolve around Microsoft, and today's STANDARD in music player and online music store is iPod and iTune.

About "choice"

The number of companies selling iTMS-compatible just doubled. I'd say that's an improvement.

Also, having iTunes pre-loaded on the desktop of HP PCs gives consumers more choice. Sure, they had that choice before (by downloading and installing), but many Windows users are paraniod (as perhaps they should be) about installing new stuff on they machines. Do not underestimate the importance of having iTunes already installed on ALL HP PCs. Even if they never buy an iPod or HiPod, that is a huge deal. And it's another choice for the consumer.

What's the Microsoft complaining about? It's hilarious when Microsoft talks about "choice."

It's the Enterprise...

While the initial 'bridge building' between Apple and HP will center on the iPod...before the end of 2004, you WILL see HP selling PowerPC based servers running Xserve.
