Alsoft releases DiskWarrior 3.0 for Mac OS X Panther

updated 11:00 am EST, Thu January 8, 2004

DiskWarrior 3.0 update

, its Mac OS X tool for native directory repair. The update brings compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and also allows users to startup the DiskWarrior on the newer G5 Macs. The company is selling updated DiskWarror 3.0 CDs on the Expo showfloor for $60 and expects to post an updater on the Web for registered users next week. Alsoft will also provide registered users with a "bootable" copy of DiskWarrior 3 CD (mainly for G5 owners) for a nominal shipping & handling fee ($20).

    "Nominal" Shipping Fee?

I don't call $20 (one-third of the purchase price) a nominal anything. Especially for current owners.

    Damned nickel & diming

Why not offer a downloadable compressed image of the CD accessible to registered users who don't mind burning their own copy? h***, I might even be willing to pay $5 for that, to offset their bandwidth costs.

    Well

Would be Nice to get the new boot for free. But no matter what Disk Worrior is worth every penny, it TOTALLY saved me after Norton Speed Disk crashed DURING defragging.

    - I threw away Norton and cracked my Norton cd in half afterwards -

    "It's not my fault"

Alsoft is not to blame for the DiskWarrior 3/Panther incompatibility. In fact DiskWarrior works, as long as your system can also boot with something below 10.2.7. (None of the machines released since late September -- my 12" PB included -- can boot the CD.) DiskWarrior works fine with my processor-upgraded AGP Power Mac running Panther.

Alsoft had to rework, retest, and redistribute the CD. It wasn't their fault we purchased new Apple computers that don't work with DiskWarrior. The original purchase price was about $100. One fifth of that for a new CD seems reasonable. Users with prior versions of the program can upgrade for $60. DiskWarrior is worth it.

    Why do we need?

You haven't done much serious Mac work, have you? Just about anybody who knows anything says DiskWarrior has saved disks that nothing else could. DiskWarrior does only one thing but it is superior at it than Disk Utility or fsck (which are the same thing) or Norton.

    not that good

I bought DW 3 from the Apple retail store for $79. I have a DP 1.25 FW800 Mac here, it boots fine. Now I am running Panther and it won't work if I boot to Panther although I can still boot the CD and fix the HDs. I lost the ability to use it under Panther natively.

Allow me to download a bootable CD is nice..
