RealNetworks music store to use new DRM format

updated 03:55 am EST, Tue January 6, 2004

RealNeworks DRM format

RealNetworks will launch a , according to CNET News.com. "Sources said the new store will be based on the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format--as are the songs in Apple's rival service--but wrapped in RealNetworks' own Helix digital rights management technology. That will limit the number of digital devices the songs can be played on, because most portable music device makers support only MP3 and Microsoft technology. Analysts, however, said the market is potentially still young enough to support the addition of RealNetworks' offering.... Apple's iPod will not be able to play Helix-wrapped songs unless Apple licenses that technology."

    two-digit iq?

    what a bunch of dorks!

thanks to their use of another DRM system nobody's mp3 player will be able to play their content even though the players would (at least in some cases) be able to play the aac data.

and even if some mp3 player starts supporting their DRM scheme, they have chosen to not make their music playable on the number one mp3 player, namely the ipod.

that's like selling gas that will only work in a delorian, but not in a ford or gm or daimler-chrysler.

    what a bunch of losers.

but, hey, it's good for apple and itms because it's one competitor less to fear. :)

    MWSF announcement!

Maybe Apple Real already has a partnership to aloud the iPod the No.1 digital player to play Real AAC song... since, is already in AAC format and Real doesn't look like they will invest in their own player and Apple is not depending on iTMS. If they go in partnership it should benefit both parties.

    ...

So far Apple has not allowed anyone to use their DRM version of AAC...Real Networks couldn't use Apple's implementation of AAC even if they wanted to...

    Nothing to fear

Apple should go ahead and license their DRM scheme to Real because nobody in their right mind would download anything from Real. Real is one giant spyware company. Real player sucks a** and is nothing more than a piece of spyware. Real is intrusive and doesn't respect privacy in the least bit. If Apple licences the DRM scheme, then they could promote themselves as opening up their DRM but never have to worry about any serious competition.

    Missing the big picture

The flip side: Real isn't exactly small. The fact that they're going with AAC instead of WMA speaks volumes.

    Only natural

Real is pushing MPEG-4 so it's only natural that they will use AAC.

    Just like Apple

What Real is doing is like Apple, AAC coding with proprietry DRM - only differnece is that Real don't have their own equivalent iPods - maybe they are going to push playing songs on your PC and burning them to CD for use eslewhere.

I doubt it wil be as smooth and as easy to use as iTMS, but lets wait and see...

    Have both make money

Assuming it's the DRM that prevents iPod to play Real's music files, why not license the DRM to give Real a revenue stream? Why not get help in driving iPod sales? Wasn't that the reason Apple launched iTMS to begin with?

    Duh.

Hmmm... Should I buy the same quality music WITH or WITHOUT crazy limitations?

I'll take iTunes, thank you very much.

At least it's not WMA ;)

    no motivation to license

At this point, I don't see why Apple, with 70% market share, would have any motivation to license Real's technology.
