Macworld Expo Keynote information, live coverage

Expo keynote details

Apple's Steve Jobs this morning delivered his Macworld Expo keynote at the Moscone Center in San Francisco (we have full coverage), which he introduced the iPod Mini ($250, 4GB) and updated the entry-level iPod with a 15GB drive ($300). Apple also introduced GarageBand (Pro-level sound studio), iPhoto 4, iMovie 4 and iDVD 4 as part of iLife 04 ($50) as well as Final Cut Express 2.0.

A replay will also be available via locations (and other universities). Jobs is scheduled to appear on CNBC's "Street Signs" (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET) and "Bullseye" (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM ET).

Terrible Stream here too

I have a cable connection and it was lousy!

I have a message for SJ... the comparison chart for the
iPod mini and the other MP3 player is bad.

You can go to BB and get a flash player 256mb for $100
not $199.

So the mini is $250 compared to $100 that's another $150.

Ok, so the mini can hold 1,000 songs compared to 60.
It is still out of my price range, and I wish he had brought it in
at a $150 price tag instead of $250.

It only costs Apple to make the 10 gig $150 to make, so they have
a 100 percent markup, so I imagine that it costs only $50 to make
this thing or maybe $75...

Think about this:

Apple introduces the mini at $150.
The market would be CRUSHED.

iPod mini

Wow!

That is the coolest thing yet, and I have got to get one of those.
One question though:

What will this do to the iPod?
Will the prices remain the same?
Probably is my guess, because this thing is sort of pricey.

Oh well, time to wipe the cobwebs off of my pocketbook
and squeeze out two and a half bucks.

iLife apps no longer free

Anybody notice that the download links for iMovie and iPhoto are gone? Almost the same as when they were about to introduce the first version of iLife - they were going to charge for it. Now, they've just shifted those plans one year.

So close, but yet again, Apple shoots themselves in the foot with pricing.

Everyone I watched the keynote with asked "Why would I want that for $249 when I can pay $50 more and get 3 times the storage?"

Good question. Why not mark up the iLife by $30 and bring the miniPod down to $149. Even at $79 iLife would be a bargain and still sell like hotcakes.

But as usual with Apple: great product + sticker shock

iLife

Just ordered the new iLife for $25. It's a steal for educational users like me. Looking forward to visiting the local apple store once my new iPod is here (5 more gigs for waiting a week!) to see what GarageBand can do with the electronic piano I want to get sometime.

Alas, I now have to tell a friend of mine (who was all excited about getting a cheap iPod) that the little one, with less storage capacity, costs the same as the 15-gig iPod I'm picking up. I don't get it -- why would anyone buy a 4-gig model when they can get a 15-gig for the same price, HD vs. flash or no?

Uhm...Since it costs 250, if they have a 100% markup then it costs them $125 to make these.

If they would have offered a smaller storage cap. for $100-150, I might have got one for my wife. Jobs perhaps doesn't realize that the small mp3 player market is for people who want enough music to workout with, and don't mind changing playlists.

Are you seriously considering buying an iPod or just searching for something to b**** about? Whatever happened to the age-old "save money for a new gadget" strategy? I bought a 20-gig this Christmas after putting aside some money for 2 months. It's how I've been able to afford every luxury item I own.

The iPod's been out for 2 years now and pricing has largely remained the same. Surely you could've used the last 2 years to save enough money to buy one? If you really were serious about getting one, anyway.

Steve began the keynote by showing one of the best pieces of visual communications ever produced:the 1984 spot.

Then, DUDE! He stunk things up with the iLife video, one of the most embarrassing video productions of all time. YOU ROCK!

Lackluster in every way, this was a crappy keynote.

price diff ok

The reason you'd by a mini instead of the $300 iPod is physical size, not storage size. If you listen to music primarily while working out and don't have a 15 GB storage need, the small form factor (and stylish colors) are a selling point.

I'm thinking about getting one to dump my daily NPR feeds to ... and when I finish them, I can toss them no problem.

Uhm... sure buddy. Are you basing that on storage space alone? The smaller iPod has the same audio circuitry, same resolution display, and still has 4GB of flash memory. Tell me where can I get that much flash RAM for $75? Not only that, it comes with remote, dock, case - stuff the 15GB doesn't have. I would love to hear your explanation on how the cost of this is only $75.

Here's what I don't get

During all this rumor talk, I never understood why so many people expected a smaller iPod to be significantly cheaper. Smaller (in technology) is almost never cheaper. Why do you think notebook computers are more expensive than desktops? Because they're smaller.

Can anyone explain *specifically* why the mini should be cheaper to manufacture (and sell) than than the iPod? The drive *might* be cheaper (if it's lower capacity but not smaller physically) but other costs of reducing size are probably high.

I saw this coming. Expectations were way over the top.

Yeah, what you don't get is half the MacNN posters are crying for attention but don't understand the difference between good attention and bad attention. So they turn to bitching about product prices, which they clearly don't understand, and about their hyper-inflated expectations not being met. They're a bunch of spoiled brats.

The keynote brought a smaller iPod at a reasonable price (especially given all the accessories it comes with), new software (iPhoto speedup! and Garage Band), and new G5 servers.

I honestly don't know what people expected? It seems like a good keynote to me.

I'm sure they'll ignore the mini-iPod also. Think about it. If you have $250 to shell out, you are gonna think to yourself, for $50 more I can get a lot more storange. Isn't that the way you think when buying HD and RAM for your computer? For a little more you can get twice as much, hence better value.

Just to clear up some apparent confusion: The iPod mini has a 4GB hard disk drive, not flash RAM.

Also, it comes with earbud headphones, belt clip, AC adapter, FireWire cable, USB 2.0 cable.

Dock and armband are optional accessories.

$250 iPod mini

I know why the iPod mini costs $250, only $50 cheaper than the 15GB iPod, and it's because Apple is not going to be able to produce and supply enough iPod mini's to meet the demand for a while - look how long it's going to take them to make enough worldwide (until April!!!). But having the high price tag they can hold back people who were going to buy the iPod mini but than saw the price.

Don't you see? If the iPod mini cost $100-150, then EVERYBODY would be ordering it - so many that there's no way Apple could supply the demand, just look how they coped with the Powerbooks and iMacs etc.

If everyone ordered it, then everyone would be moaning about how many months they've been waiting to get theirs - but if you put a high price tag on it and make them wait until the price tag comes down (when there are enough in production) then they won't complain because they've waited many months to get what they think is a bargain!!!

Also, remember at the BEGINNING of a production run the COST is high, as Apple go on to produce more of these units the cost to make them will go down and in turn so will the price. This goes for anything, for the first generation of DVD-Writers which used to cost thousands of dollars - and it will happen to the iPod mini - it will get cheaper once Apple has made about 100,000 of them.

All the profanity and the likes is a bit much. Yes the Keynote was a little bit of a downer but come on as much stuff as they have given us and even the stuff they made us pay for is well worth it. You people need to take a step back and relex! One thing I must say I'm not particularly happy about is that you can't get iMovie, iPhoto as a download and choose if you would like iDVD etc! Poor Keynote

Ignoring the sticker shock arguments, I think this was a very poor keynote. Very little innovation here.

I'll shell out the $50 for iLife because I use iPhoto enough to justify it but, come on Apple, where's the beef?

The iMac 20th anni. and they celebrate with - a mini iPod? huh? Garage Band? double huh?

The only hope now is that they held something back for the superbowl. Apple did buy ad time for this years superbowl. I hope to god they don't show an iPod ad and have a computer to plug!

Well, those are my thoughts. A disappointing keynote. Suspect this keynote will go down in history as the music keynote.

Still waiting...

Okay, I'm not an mp3 music listener... just don't spend much of my day listening to music, I guess. So iPods just don't interest me (but great for Apple if they sell a million of 'em--I'm fine with that�it�s just that personally a 50GB iPod for $99.95 would only interest me at a technical level).

BUT, what I DO need is a new top-of-the-line Mac. And when I buy a new Mac, I try to spend as much as I can on the finest they have and at a time when I feel I'm getting the best deal for the future. I don't buy a new Mac too often, because I have a family to support, etc. I waited FOREVER for the G5. Then I heeded the warning about holding out for at least the second revision.

But HEY, IBM is producing the G5, and they're going to really push it forward, right? We're going from 2GHz to 3GHz in a year, right! So, we should see an updated Mac G5 line-up before too long, right?

Obviously I was REALLY hoping to see something new with this keynote. I didn't, and so I'm STILL waiting. I�m too embarrassed to say how old my G3 is, but trust me, I�m HURTING for a new Mac. But since I�ve waited this long, I wont be plopping down the big-bucks for anything until Apple upgrades their PowerMac line-up. I just can�t do it.

With a CPU that�s being updated more regularly, I think Apple just has to update their line-up at least twice a year. This isn�t the days of the �when will Moto upgrade it� G4. These are G5-times! Let�s get those updates flowing, Apple! I�ll be rushing to the head of the line with lots of dough to throw at you when you do!

They just did updates to the G5s. What do you people want. And they have extended warranties on iBooks already. Its called Applecare. Why you think you have to wait until March or June for 'real' news is besides me, since Apple is not limited to announcements on a quarterly basis (last year they announced new towers at the end of January).

iPod Mini too late

The iPod Mini that was announced today is no longer competitive with what Rio announced...today. As shown on MacNN's main page they're announcing a 4GB disk-based player that weighs less than 2 ounces (less than the iPod Mini), has a smaller form factor, provides 16 hours of music playback with it's built-in Lithium-Ion battery, and includes a USB 2 cable. You can use it with iTunes so long as your library has mp3s which I'd assume the majority of the public still uses. Selling price? $250.00 So besides colors and an extra cable that you don't need, I'd say the iPod Mini is even less impressive for the price Apple is offerring.

Guys....... for all the people saying Apple is ripping people off with the iPod mini, that it sh ould be $150, etc. This thing is clearly using the new Cornice drives. The Rio Nitrus with the 1.5GB Cornice drive sold for $219. The new Rio Nitrus with what I assume is the same 4 gig drive (or combination of 2 gig drives) is also in the $250 range. So in this case, Apple's price is VERY competitive with other players using these mini-hard drives. And note that the iPod mini manages to retain the great interface and solid state scrollwheel, and you get a much better experience than the Nitrus.

Just to ask, have you EVER used the previous gen 1.5 gig Rio Nitrus? The interface for it is terrible, especially the little red joystick thing. It's a major pain in the a** and it is not pleasant to use (I know, my brother got one and he let me borrow it for a week to try out). The iPod solid state scrollwheel and UI completely blows it out of the water, and that alone makes this new iPod Mini much more impressive than the new Rio Nitrus.

This is what MacRumors had on their live coverage page:

30% are Flash players between $100-$200. Equal 30% that's under $100. We looked at this high end flash market and we want to go after that. The under $100 flash players get put into a drawer since they don't hold enough songs.

So, you see, Apple was going after the "high end" flash players, not just all players. Its overpriced like the iPod itself is, and that hasn't seen a price break since they went $299 on the low-end when they first came out. Or was it $399 when it came out?

Even if the iPod mini were $150, people would complain that there were no new computers announced, no updated hardware except the Xserve, and that's still overpriced, and you can't get the OS in a 10 user license only, and it doesn't come with enough RAM or enough slots or enough something, and its too big or too small. And iLife is too expensive, it should all be free. And apple didn't cut the prices in the ITMS to be competitive in the marketplace, that they didn't make iPhoto available for Windows, that they're still waiting for the iPhone or the iWalk or the iPDA or whatever, and where's the set-top box we've been hearing about, and on and on and on.

Gotta love the mac loser-dom.

Exactly. That's why apple should have released an iPod with the same formfactor but with less storage for less money. The WHOLE POINT of an iPod mini is to get the price down for people who want a low-end iPod! The WHOLE POINT. If the smallish formfactor was going to raise the price, apple shouldn't have done it, plain and simple.

Boy, apple must think people are really stupid to look at the smaller formfactor and colors for a price that's only $50 less then a regular iPod. Typical apple. Form beats function. And the amazing thing is, apple keeps selling product with this strategy. I guess people really ARE stupid enough to keep buying stuff from apple based on the s*** look of their products, even though the guts of what they are getting sucks. Wait, people are stupid enough to buy it, but Apple's to blame for charging the price? Hey, that's a free economy, stupid. You charge what the market will pay. Who would be stupid? Apple for selling there's at $250, or you selling the same number of them for $150?

Oh, and here's some more economics for you. If you overcharge, you'll sell less product. If you undercharge, you sell more, but (a) need more stock, and (b) make less per item. If you can't get (a), then selling for less is stupid because you'll make less per item to sell the same number of goods. The whole point is to find the price point where supply = demand, and as such maximize return on investment.

Those who complain about the mini price miss Steve's marketing genius:

True, for $50 more, you get an iPod -- but then more revenue to Apple. Buy iMini, Apple wins; buy iPod, Apple STILL wins. Steve invented Mini to sell iPods!

As have been pointed out by others, Mini is competitively priced with high-end MP3 players. So it's win-win for Apple all around.

I don't have a problem with what apple did with iLife. I think they are targeting the people that didn't buy it the first time. $50 this time around gets you a much better value.

But taking away the download links for the old versions is just lame. Come on apple. The old versions were free and they still should be free. Don't you think people have enough brains to take their existing free versions and post them on the net for people to download who want the free versions? And it would be perfectly legal for them to do so, since iTunes, iMovie, and iPhoto were free. So what you did is just stupid.

It's like apple thinks they can just magically wave a wand over us and have us forget the older iLife. Mind you I don't care: I downloaded the free iLife progs a long time ago. But taking away the download links for the free versions is just underhanded and childish. If apple thinks iLife '03 is a good product, they would have no problem letting people download the old versions and see what they are missing.

Anyone still wanting iPhoto etc. go to Apple.ca for downloads. They operate on a time delay basis and won't change the site for a day or two. While you're there look for the iTunes Canada store.

That's the whole point? Wow, who knew. I thought the whole point was to sell product. Not to satisfy some people's demand for a cheap MP3 player.

here's an idea. Don't buy it. That'll show Apple. It'll force them to either reduce the cost or stop selling it. Yes, I know, you're shocked to find out that Apple is selling something that you don't have to buy.

And I swear people were saying and responding the same exact stuff two years ago when the 'over-priced, undervalued' iPod was released.

Oh, and one more thing. Its apple. Name one thing they sell that isn't considered overpriced? Why would the iPod mini be any diffeent than anything else in their store?

It just sucks that apple gets away with what they do, is what I'm saying. Apple is more about suckering people into buying, instead of marking things up at a reasonable price.

And for me, it reflects negatively on when I buy from apple, knowing that they repeatedly do this. I've always viewed apple as an ethical company who is better then other companies because they CARE about their customers. That's the appeal of apple vs say a Dell. Apple STANDS for something. But the new apple is more focused on exploting the apple brand. Overmarketing things. Smoke and mirrors. Instead of just selling good product for a reasonable price. Apple may win a few customers by what they do, but I'll bet they lose just as many.

But what about the iTunes Music Store? You can't buy anything without iTunes. As a PC user (I'm not really) how is someone gonna buy songs from Apple? That could really cut into their 100 million song a year projection... I think iTunes will have to continue to be a free download - they would be crazy not to.

Apple never sold ANYTHING at a reasonable price. At least nothing I recall. Everything was and is more expensive then comparable products. Why people seem to think this is new is beyond me.

Apple hasn't been some hippy company trying to make the world a better place since, I don't know, Woz left. Its all about money. Why? Well, its a business. A public one as that. How'd you like to run a company that didn't try to maximize their profit, but was thinking of the consumer? Sure, makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, until the stockholders demand actual profits, increased revenues, want to know why your taking losses when you could be selling stuff for more per item. And when you don't respond, Scully kicks you out and takes over the helm.

Oh, and what do you consider losing customers? People who've bought apple but are finally fed up over the price of an MP3 player that they're going elsewhere (like they did with the original iPod!), or customers they never had but perhaps could've sold stuff to if they had priced things lower?

Oh, and if they priced them much lower, iPod sales would really take a tumble.

The iTunes download link is still available. still on the main iTunes page. I guess its easy to miss, as its only RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAGE, IN BIG WHITE LETTERS "DOWNLOAD NOW FOR MAC AND WINDOWS".

So, why don't you people look into it (it took me all of 10 seconds) before starting to whine about some non-existent occurrence.
