Apple posts modified version of "1984" TV ad

\"1984\" with an iPod

Apple today posted a slightly of the original "1984" commerical, according to one MacNN reader: "In honor of 20 years of Macintosh, Apple has posted the "1984" ad on its website. The woman embodying the spirit of the nonconformist Macintosh however has been altered to include an iPod placed on her hip and the trademark white earbuds in her ears. It's a nice touch to illustrate that the 21st century Apple continues to innovate and break down barriers."

must be getting cheap on marketing or hiring crappy marketing people who cant come up with a good idea and go take a 20 year old ad and plop on an ipod, how stupid. Driving a classic commercial to death. Probably do the same for the 50th anniversary if they still are in business.

iPod add-in

For what it's worth, they did a pretty amazing job of adding in the iPod and earbuds/wires etc. If you never saw the original and didn't know anything about iPod or that it didn't exist 20 years ago, it would be pretty hard to tell it was added in.

Is that the original girl? seems more like she's an actress that would be from a 90s Baywatch, I don't mean that in a negative waym, just an observation. I guess those shorts were popular back then and after going frame by frame, at the end you can tell the iPod was added to her hip. Not a bad job at all getting the iPod and wires on the original video.

That was the beauteous Anya Major. Only one woman can, um... bounce down the aisle with a hammer like that. A frame by frame comparison with the unmodified commercial confirms it. And also confirms the added iPod ruined it.

Cool Commercial Find

I don't think it was laziness or a lack of ideas that made them redo this commercial. I think it was just a neat idea. The original is awesome, but I think it's very cool that they re-worked it and added the iPod. In fact I kind of wish they had changed it even a bit more by adding a new voiceover that announced something new for this year. Even 20 years later it's still better than most of the c*** commercials that are on TV now. Most of the commercials for the super bowl the past few years have sucked.
Now check this out... I was going through part of the commercial frame by frame to look at the awesome job they did adding the iPod and I noticed that they also changed the date and time display on the video screeen to "01.26.04 9:14". (It can be best seen at about 0:42 into it.)
Is that date significant for something? Could something else be announced only a week and a half later?

Apple marketing has really gone overboard this time. F**king with a timeless apple commercial just to sell some more iPods. How lame.

It just goes to show how important music is to apple now a days. I know the iPod is a success, but when last I checked, it was the MAC's 20th aniversery, NOT the iPod's.

I would put this up there with the killing of the Happy Mac and the Jaguar-colored 10.2 boxes.

IMHO, it was a terrible mod to a timeless commercial.
For a company with 3% market share after 20 years, it should be doing something bold and risky, not playing it safe.

This commercial says to me that the iPod is Apple's future, not the Macintosh. In a couple of years, I'll be posting this from the iPodWorld Expo in San Francisco.

A disappointing keynote, a disappointing show.

If you look very carefully at the orginal 1984 commerical and this one you'll see the dates are the same. 1/26/84. If you don't have the orginal commerical do a google search for it. As far as I could tell they both look like 1/26.84 to me.

I have to agree with you on that one. It's really making me nervous how much faith Apple is putting in iPod/iTunes/iTMS. It's like apple is stunned to finally have a hit, and so now it seems like they're restructuring everything around that hit. It's really short-sighted if you ask me.
