Microsoft to unveil Portable Media Centers

updated 01:15 pm EST, Mon January 5, 2004

MS Portable Media Centers

Microsoft is expected to unveil a at CES this week that "in the view of some analysts, could give the popular iPod an extra measure of competition" along with its previously announced music download service expected to be released later this year through its MSN Internet service, according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "The hand-held devices, called Portable Media Centers, will store and play back video, music and photos. Unlike portable DVD players already on the market, the Portable Media Centers will come with built-in hard drives for storing media. They will work in conjunction with personal computers in much the same way music devices do, letting people move files back and forth between them."

    Portable?

I love that Steve Jobs said what he did about making iPod compatible with other music stores...

How portable does that thing look to any of you? It looks like a white elephant or rather an 800 pound gorilla to me.

Microsoft and Gates are foaming at the mouth at the thought that Apple has now an 80 percent share of the marketplace.

Now, just wait to see the next evolution of iPods and other hardware that should make Apple's future more secure than ever. As a new Mac owner, this instills confidence that I made the right decision.

    Good going Apple!

    And will likely cost.....

...the same price of a low end laptop. And does a whole lot less. Way to go MS. Yah!

    Another insight by

the very insightful analyst Rob Enderle. If you don't know who this t*** is, look him up on google. He is a MS b**** to no end. Because of his wonderful insight on this device, I think I will run out and buy one immediately!

    MS Innovates Again!

While Microsoft doesn't have a real good record when it comes to ripping off ideas, once they stumble into one, they ususally destroy the product and devour the market. Look at all the great things they've done for PDAs, WebTV and Tablet PCs.

    Boy, that's innovation.

    Brainless

It never fails to astonish me, the lack of forsight MS has. Why don't they just put wheels on the bottom so I can drag it around.

Whoever calls combining devices into a single device inovation should mix milk and grapefruit juice and see how they like it.

    Poo poo this...

but the iPod is seriously ready for this kind of multimedia update. Movies, songs, pictures. It makes sense for the iPod to move in this direction. Throw in radio, voice recording and built-in speakers while you're at it ;-)

    it'll be as great...

...as the "smart displays" that microsoft said would change the way we used our computers. wait... what? microsoft just stop development of those? oh.

    Puhlease

Sure, Apple innovates but it too rips off plenty (mouse, GUI, multi-user, journaled file system, wireless KB/mouse, etc). Good companies copy the best ideas from each other and that is ultimately good for the consumer.

I am tired off this ripping off s*** as if Apple invented fire and sliced bread.

More FUD, Apple did not rip off their GUI, they BOUGHT it, that's right, spell the word B-O-U-G-H-T it from Xerox with a huge stock trade. Last I read, buying something doesn't = ripping off (unless you got a super deal for it and the seller sorely underestimated the value for the product you bought from them).
