InDesign CS PageMaker Ed.

Adobe today announced , an extension to InDesign CS to help PageMaker users "make a quick and successful" transition to its InDesign layout and design package. It includes a full version of Adobe InDesign CS software as well as a new PageMaker Plug-in Pack, templates, and training materials. It will ship in the first quarter of this year for $350 to registered users of PageMaker and will run on Mac OS X. Adobe will cease further development of PageMaker.

"InDesign's modern code-base provides the best long-term solution for PageMaker customers who are looking to take advantage of the latest advances in hardware design and operating system innovation," said Jim Heeger, senior vice president of Creative Professional Products at Adobe. "InDesign CS PageMaker Edition is the fastest and easiest way for PageMaker users to upgrade to the next-generation publishing platform."

The Adobe PageMaker Plug-in Pack adds essential PageMaker capabilities to InDesign CS, extending conversion support to now include PageMaker 6.0 documents, as well as 6.5-7.x and QuarkXPress 3.3-4x files. In addition, the ALAP InBooklet Special Edition plug-in automatically rearranges a document's pages at print time into an imposition with complete control over margins, gaps, bleeds, creep and crossover traps. Other features include automated bullets and numbering, Data merge, and the ability to switch keyboard shortcuts in InDesign CS to match PageMaker shortcuts.

Adobe is also bundling over 80 professional templates, including advertisements, business cards, certificates and letterhead design in its template browser. The company also includes Total Training video instruction discs to help users "get the most from InDesign and build on their existing PageMaker experience."

Adobe InDesign CS PageMaker Edition will be available in North America (for both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows) in the first calendar quarter of 2004. Registered users who own any version of Adobe PageMaker, can purchase an upgrade for $350, while education customers can purchase the full version for $220. The PageMaker Plug-in Pack will be available for $50 as an electronic download only and will also be available as part of Adobe's Creative Suite.

An end of an era has come

How ironic almost 19 years ago, 4 major factors has revolutionized the desktop publishing industry.
    1. Adobe postcript language
    2. laser printers
    2. Macintosh computers
    3. and Aldus PageMaker.

We shall miss you ol' friend.

    What a pity.

Just 19 years ago? Adobe could have let the poor guy last for one more year so that it would celebrate its 20th year, and then let it fade away so that it could relish its significant role in the computing and publishing history. It would have been a very sweet conclusion to this once venerable software.

    This is Adobe's plan.

The company knows that there would be no InDesign if it didnot copy many features (codes) that were original to PM (Control panel, threading techniques, Edit story and many more). And since InDesign continues to remain in the shadows of PM amongst its avid users, Adobe has no other choice but to terminate it. Especially since PM is nearing its 20th anniversary. There will always be comparison.

Just like Mac and OS X

Just like Mac OS and Mac OS X.
Except that at least Apple retained the name Mac (for continuity and maybe for setimental purposes) and at least Jobs--one of its original creator-- is still there to supervise it.
Perhaps this what really ticks Adobe people, they were not the original developers-- it was Aldus or Altsys.

    Just like Mac & Windows!

...would be a more accurate analogy, since PageMaker was created by a different company,

    funny...

i thought pagemaker was killed off after ID2 came out. or does development mean support?

now if quark gets off its a** and gets a version that will allow you to save down to 4.x, i can dump classic completely.
