Apple VP Ive profiled

The Guardian Unlimited has , Apple's Vice-president of industrial design: "Friends say the roots of his success lie in his lateral thinking - finding the true appeal of an object, often ignoring the traditional approach to design. Inspiration comes from almost anywhere. The original candy-coloured iMac had its roots in gumdrops. The popular transparent Apple mouse came from thinking about how drops of water sit on a flat surface. An angle-poise desk lamp helped inspire the new iMac."

I heard more than once that Jobs described a sunflower when trying to lead Ive to a design, after shooting down the original concepts Ive brought to him. I wonder what the true story is?

Sloppy Fact Checking

Ive's mate from Australia is designer Marc Newson. Very sloppy fact checking on the part of the newspaper. Also belies their lack of knowledge about design as Newson is quite famous in the industry.

I'm q**** and I think that Jonathan Ive is a very hot looking guy, too. It's a pity that he isn't g** ;)

Many q***** use Apple products because they "have the s** and the power".

Ive needs to be a team player instead of jumping at each and every self-promotion opportunity.

FYI - his team is the one that comes up with the great designs. Ive simply gets the orders from Steve, relays the orders to the team, then takes all credit once his team had succeeded.

Take it from someone who knows the guy - Ive is a first-class jerkoff.

That's so funny..i was just thinking to myself "why does everybody kiss the ground this guy walks on?" i think it has to do with the fact that Apple has conned everyone into believing that Jonathon Ive is some great industrial designer instead of the "yes-man" that he is.

I remember when Ive was interviewing. Steve thought that Ive's good looks and British accent would communicate well to market and internationally.

I mean, come on people, wouldn't a great designer be locked behind closed doors in pursuit of excellence instead of travelling the world from media outlet to media outlet? Sure he/she would. But that's not what Ives does because he is simply a front man for a hard-working design department that gets no credit or mentions in national media.

Ive is a good representative for Apple - nothing more, nothing less.

A "yes man"? Oh please, gimme a break. That doesn't make any sense - so now Steve Jobs is the designer, and Ive and his team just execute Steve's designs? That's just plain wrong - Steve Jobs has ideas, but believe me, he is NO designer, nor would he ever claim to be. He knows is what he likes, and he has to be shown something before he can approve (or disapprove) of it. Take it from someone who knows.

As far as taking credit, yes Ive is indirectly is doing that, but that's because most people in the press would rather talk to one person than a whole team (the "great man" theory of journalism). But listen to him talk - you never hear him say "I" all that frequently, it's always "we". Just because he's featured in stories and people like to write about him doesn't automatically make him a "jerkoff", that's just pure jealousy talking.

Sure the team deserves much credit. But just as a leader cannot work without a team, in industrial design a team cannot function without a leader. It is a mutual relationship - those designs would not have happened without either side working together. Ive deserves credit for the designs coming from the department he runs, plain and simple.
