Jobs among 2003 Winners

Steve Jobs is among CBS MarketWatch's : "At a time when legit music downloads were catching on about as quickly as, well, Apple computers, Steve Jobs came along and did it right with ITunes. Still, the most successful online music-seller isn't profitable, but its intent has always been to drive sales of IPod music players. With nearly 20 million songs sold since its April launch, not only has the cult of Apple concept has also sent competitors like Dell and Microsoft scurrying to get their own music services up and running."

Excellent. I can't wait to see how MS copies Apple this time!

Hard to write a pro-Apple article without getting at least one dig in, eh?

    how to have more songs?

    Hi,

I keep hearing that the iTunes Music Store runs at a loss. I assume this is because of the download and maintenance costs of having 500,000 songs to host. Does that mean that the losses would be greater with an increasing numbers of songs?

i.e. wouldn't Apple's loss be significantly greater when it has to host 5 million songs? I cannot imagine that Apple's sales of iPods would keep on increasing to keep up with the amount of music being released daily/weekly/monthly.

Does this mean, that "older" music will be moved out of the iTMS, just like in a real music store? That would be a shame.

    Pardon my ignorance. Just curious.
