Apple eyeing second retail location in Manhattan

updated 01:10 am EST, Thu December 18, 2003

2nd Apple Store in NYC?

Apple is negotiating a 21,000-square-foot lease for the GM Building's underground concourse, for the computer maker's , according to The New York Post: " The store will have a mini-entrance at the edge of Fifth Ave. and then drop into the space that once housed Vidal Sassoon, a travel agency and a handful of other uninspiring renters.... Another broker, Richard Hodos, president of Madison HGCD Retail Services, said Apple is known to have been scouting Fifth Avenue locations between Rockefeller Center and the GM Building. Rents along Fifth between 50th and 59th streets go for $700 'and even higher' a foot, he added."

    London?!??

What about Fort Myers, Florida? Er, Ah, Well, I guess London would be nice. But really, it's all about MY needs! :)

    Misleading

No Apple Store is 21,000 square feet! Likely they are eyeing a portion of the space and if negotiations are underway, the very word indicates Apple is seeking a reasonable price.

    Reasonable price Midtown

Reasonable price? In Manhattan? In Midtown?

At least this will kill "RCS Computer Experience". My favorite sales person story is from RCS....

    (looking at a Vaio laptop)
me: Does this come with built in 801.11b?
sales: Hmmm... I don't know. Let me see (looks at laptop)... not real sure there, but I can find out.
    me: OK, thinks.
sales: So, you ready to take it home today?

    ALWAYS BE CLOSING!!!

    $1.2 million/month

Is the $700/ft price an annual rate, or a monthly rate? if monthly, the space would be $14.7 million/month.

    Guess the Soho store is..

I guess the Soho store is making money after all. Originally I remember talk that with Manhattan rents the Soho store wouldn't make money (or much) and merely be a flagship store, paid for as much out of marketing as with profit motive.
If they are eyeing another store in Mid-town, I guess Soho is much more successful than predicted!

    FAO Schwartz

If they close, that would be some prime retail space available on Fifth Avenue.

    BIG Mistake.

There's no way that Apple's demand warrants two stores in NYC. This iPod bubble's gonna burst plenty soon and they'll be back to just making slow computers with almost no game software and a rabid fan base (myself included). And they'll have TWO properties to maintain while doing so. Big, HUGE mistake.
