Apple offers workaround for OS X DHCP vulnerability

updated 09:15 am EST, Wed December 3, 2003

DCHP vulnerability fix

Apple in a Knowledge Base article describes (noted here last week), noting that users can configure Directory Access to protect your Mac from a malicious DHCP server: "In many cases, your Mac is protected from this kind of exploit because the malicious DHCP server has to be part of your local network, or "subnet". If your computers are the only ones on your local network and you have a broadband connection (DSL or cable service) with a Network Address Translation device--such as an AirPort Base Station--this exploit is not possible."

    Well....

"In many cases" is not "all" cases. And it's sure that there would be an incident that this exploit could happen.

"Workarounds" are not "fixes". C'mon Apple! Don't be acting like Micro$oft. Just start working on a "fix".

You're assuming Apple isn't working on a fix. At least Apple posted a workaround for now. You sound like a troll to me. Oops, I meant "be acting like Micro$oft" is not "be Microsoft".

It is clear that you don't understand the exploit at all. The fix would be just to change default setting to be what the workaround suggests. There is no software code to be changed, because that's the way DHCP is supposed to work.

It's like if Apple set File Sharing with guest access to be the default. The exploit is that guests can connect to your Mac. The workaround would be to disable guest access. The so-called "fix" would be to disable it by default. There is no code change (other than the default setting) because File Sharing with guest access is supposed to allow guests to connect.

So, yes, in this case the workaround is a "fix". Do some research before you criticize - it prevents you from looking foolish.

Another bug in Mac OS X..

Wow ... another security bug in Mac OS X.

In ANY cases, workarounds are never fixes. "Workarounds" are terms for lazy developers who don't won't spend time fixing their mistakes. Research that, YOU FOOLISH TWIT!!!!!!!

No, workarounds are steps usually given by the developers to work around a software issue while a fix is being created. As a programmer, I know that fixes sometimes take a while to develop, and that customers actually appreciate the fact that they aren't stuck at a point waiting for a fix to be released (and, by the way, fixes don't normally come out immediately, as rushing out fixes can lead to a lack of a good QA process and actually cause more problems then it was designed to fix).

So, why don't you research that, you uninformed twit!
