Apple experiencing problems with iTunes Music Store

iTunes Music Store problems

Several MacNN readers note that Apple is experiencing problems with the this morning: "I logged onto the iTunes Music Store just now to see what new music had been posted, but all of the song/album/artist/etc. links throughout the store appear to be broken -- they link to one of three or so pages, and never the page you want. (For example, clicking on Counting Crows takes you to a No Doubt screen. Every single link on the store seems to be broken.) I don't know if they corrupted their database during the update or if they got hacked or what, but others are starting to notice the problem."

Probably someone tried to log in again from a Dell. iTunes couldn't take it any longer and decided to choke rather than perform the handshaking. I blame the PC:s.

interface locks iTunes

Hitting the right arrow on the "Just Added" list caused iTunes to beach ball and need to be force quit.

Oh, and as far as "Likely: Window/Unix hacker" goes... yeah, right.

The internal links used by iTMS are bringing up the artists mentioned regardless of what ID is passed in the link. IOW, the links are being formed correctly, but the detail pages aren't honoring the artist, song, and album IDs correctly.

Strange is that some IDs bring up different (but not correct) artists. Lamb, for example, is now Madonna in Spoken Word, but most other artists I've tested are now Andy Gibb.

What we can't tell from here is whether this is a code problem (unhealthy session dependancies gotten corrupted? does iTMS even honor cookies?) or a data problem (bad migration to new server duplicated IDs)... the former seems more likely. In any event, an environment configuration error in WebObjects or human error in code or data maintenance are far more likely than foul play.

Give them a Chance

We are really lucky that it took this long for something to go wrong. Thing of all the problems people were suspecting would happen right after iTMS for windows was released. I say it was a very smooth transition. It's been only a couple hours, I'd wait to be worried if it takes most of the day to fix. This is their first major problem, so let them think it out and fix it right.

iTMS slow

Yeah I missed the whole dead links/wrong links fiasco, but this evening it's definitely been really slow. Lots of re-buffering when listening to previews, and when clicking on the next and previous buttons in the "New Releases", "Just Added", "Staff Picks", etc. it tends to hang for a long time. Usually when I cancel it and then load it again it's nearly instant.

This never used to happen before it came out for Windows. Damn Windows users clogging up Apple's servers.
