Thursby compares ADmitMac v1.1 to Panther

updated 08:50 pm EST, Tue November 25, 2003

ADmitMac vs. Panther

Thursby Software has posted a white paper , offering both a historical and detailed technical comparison of the technologies: "Although Apple claims that they support 'SMB Home Directories,' it is also apparent that they do not understand the true use of this feature by most of their customers. Panther merely mounts the Home Directory at log on, while ADmitMac allows you to actually use it for your home directory."

    Why?

It's one of the few lineups I've seen where the copetition--in this case Apple--has so much "yes" as opposed to "no."

    Give it time...

It's only a matter of time before Apple is able to implement all these features. Basically if it is supported and stable in Samba, it will find it's way into the Mac OS. One thing Thursby forgot to mention is that the software costs as much as the entire Mac OS. I prefer Apple's implementation. No added cost. They use NetInfo for caching and it is very easy to add information to user accounts, plus you can also add Apple's schema modifications if desired. With AdmitMac your locked into Thursby's setup.
