updated 11:10 am EST, Tue November 18, 2003

ShapeShifter offers themes

Unsanity today released , a "haxie" for Mac OS X that allows users to change the overall appearance of your Mac using 'themes': "We're not talking about just desktop backgrounds and icons here, we're talking about everything - the look of windows, menus, buttons, absolutely everything." The $20 utility offers the ability to preview themes, swap themes with other users (including Jaguar users), and change the GUI of the system environment without stability issues.

    Amiga memories

Seeing a utility called "ShapeShifter" brings back fond memories of an unrelated utility by the same name for AmigaOS back in the early to mid 90s. It was a very slick utility that allowed an Amiga to run MacOS 8.1 and earlier natively. Prior to getting my first MacOS-compatible machine (a PowerComputing PowerCenter 120), I used it any time I had Mac stuff at work that I wanted to bring home.

    Super.

Sounds great, but how about getting stuff like FruitMenu and Dock Detox updated for Panther first? I have all this shareware I've paid for that I can't use.

    Get cracking, m'laddos!

    complete c***

i installed this software and it completely locked up my finder and crashed my dock. had to boot to safe mode and could luckily use the menubar to remount the installer image and uninstall.

the only system modification i run is dock pinning via cocktail and custom icons via candybar. i think a noob would have spent a while getting out of this one.

    Works fine...

The only noob here is the previous reader, who probably did not read on the precautions that needed to be taken if previous theme apps were installed. I have been using it for 5 hours now and no problems at all.

    Didn't work here either

10.3.1, clean install. Never installed any themes before, and thought this might finally change my mind.

I had the same problems, finder locking up, other applications would start to run, but never fully come up - including the (un)installer. Had to find and remove everything manually.

I won't be trying this again any time soon. And no, I'm not a n00b, I've been using Macs for ~15 years. and OS X for 2.5 years.

Wait for Candybar and another programs to come to 10.3. There's a few cheaper alternatives, that won't hose your system like unsanity's "haxies".
