not flash, quicktime

It seems that it's not flash, but quicktime doing the animations. Just right click on anything playing, and a quicktime menu pops up.

GREAT site design!

Very slick site design and in synergy with the product they're marketing. The iCard gift requests is another great idea. It will be interesting to see how this site will link from the iTunes section of apple.com. Hope they sell a ton of them.

How is that done?

I love that site. I figured it had to be flash. I know little about this stuff -- and really want to learn badly -- but how is this accomplished in Quicktime? Anyone know??

it is flash that is embedded in a Quicktime movie. QT is able to play back flash movies.

So what kind of flash knowledge is needed to do something as beautiful as this site .. like making the iPod hold up a sign or lassoing something. Wow. I'm so impressed. I think Apple's regular site is nice, but this site is much, much better.

cool site...

but the screensaver sucks... it doesn't adjust resolution on a PC... haven't tried it on my Mac yet but I figure it does the same thing. I have a 1600x1200 resolution and the screen saver appears as 640x480 with a white boarder.... an exceptionally large white boarder on mine.

A simple solution:
draw three pictures of an iMac. one that's about to jump, one flying and one that just hit the ground.
If it looks at least somehow cool -> get FlashMX, a graphic tablet and Photoshop.
If it looks like a monkey on LSD-> get an iPod

Bah. "You'll need to update QuickTime" - makes the site entirely worthless.

Sure, they're targetting Mac users - and I am one - but at the moment, I'm browsing over to it using Firebird on a Linux box.

A site which doesn't degrade gracefully and/or have appropriate alternative content is a sign of bad design and lazy designers. Apple can and should do better.

target

As a non-teenager, I feel like I've stumbled onto a site that's for a different target audience entirely. This website is very much oriented at the 16 year old teen with no disposable income of his own creation. not that that's a bad thing -- teenagers in this country fuel our economy -- but i'm somewhat surprised by apple apparently shifting to a younger target audience, given how i always associated their advertising at targeting the 18 to 26 yr old market instead

is reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly slow at school. And we use 2.8 Ghz P4s for engineering apps. I wonder what the problem is. Bandwidth isn't it. We got plenty.

hello, testbed

You may remember not too long ago that Apple hired an actual web-design firm to do a makeover. The first product of that was the new iPod campaign, and this is clearly a test site taking that concept much further. I would not be at all suprised if this wasn't a prototype that we're sneak-peeking.

Still needs some tweaks (like the ability to degrade gracefully ...) but on the whole I think it's well-aimed at its target audience.

Well marketing to 16 yr olds is viral as they're always hunting for the next "coolest thing" (I don't know what word they use now so don't ask). Also, the fact that they're young means Apple's got the chance to grow with them as a brand. It's all about mindshare and it's better to start your audience early. Just look at teenage magazines and you'll see ads for cars.

That site is creative, quick and I have the free version of Quicktime, not full so it also works.. maybe the guy with the really fast PC should buy a mac... (1ghz - PB)....

The new iPod marketing towards a younger, less sophisticated audience may dilute the iPod's coolness factor. I didn't like the iPod bouncing around like some Microsoft Office Helper. Has no grace.

Um, web designers do NOT do advertising campaigns. They aren't marketers. The ad campaign was done by an ad-group (most likely Chiat Day or whoever has the current Apple contract). The website then foolows the theme of the ad-campaign. Not the other way around.

Apple has class. Show it.

The ad campaign looks to appeal to college students. This website is mid-teens. They do not share the same market, but the integration of the coloring/silhouette figures makes it congruent. There is no Bauhaus design influence in the animations, if you get my drift.

Eventhough there are still a lot of room for improvements (check out "the best flash web sites" around with your desired dearch engine-- there many) at least Apple is going to the right direction if it is targeting such young market.

It really kind of annoys me how much emphasis iPod/iTunes get with apple nowadays. f*** computer market share, lets go after Sony! Pfft.

Don't get me wrong, iPod/iTunes is really good stuff. But apple is blowing it way out of proportion. A whole website just for marketing iTunes? Come on.
