LapCop 2.0 for Panther

SweetCocoa has released for Panther. LapCop is a $25 application that sends an alert e-mail to an address of your choice in case your Mac is lost or stolen: "It automagically detects when your Mac has been lost or stolen and goes into alert mode. As soon as your Mac is connected to the internet, LapCop contacts our LapCop server., which compiles all necessary information and sends an alert e-mail." [Jaguar, Panther]

    What if it's reformatted

If a thief with some Apple know-how gets your laptop, he/she is most likely going to simply reformat the hard drive. If this person is going to hunt around on your machine to see what nuggets of software or information he can find, he would be a fool to connect to the Internet without hunting around for an app like LapCop.

I suppose you are really paying for the *chance* that a freshly stolen laptop will suddenly appear on the Internet and be able to send this alert e-mail.
