Apple releases Mac OS X 10.3.1 update

Apple releases OS X 10.3.1

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.3.1 -- an update to its recently-released "Panther" operating system -- via the Software Update utillity. The update "delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, services and technologies: FileVault, Printing, WebDav, and FireWire 800 drives." The update also helps address an issue recently identified with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. "Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple recommends you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive manufacturer for more information." The update also includes the latest Security Updates.

And network bugs?

I think is too soon. I�m having a lot of netowrking problems, windows sharing, color spin ball etc. I'm going to install at night but no real hope this is cured to soon.

double periods, commas

After upgrading to 10.3.1, typing text in Mail or TextEdit causes periods and commas to be repeated twice. For example, if I try to type an email containing 10.3.1, then it turned out as 10..3..1??? I've found the same thing happening in TextEdit? Anybody else see this?

I wish I was making this up. Just logged in as another user to check, but it doesn't happen there. I've tried trashing the Mail Preferences, but it still does it. So, now I'm hunting down what else could be causing these double puntuation marks. Any suggestions are welcome...

Do you have the cocoAspell installed? If so, an old version of the plugin can cause this to happen. Just update cocoAspell and you should be alright.

I've tried removing my Preference folder, the entire Library folder, I've run DiskRepair for the install disk, nothing seems to help. I'm still getting the double punctuation in certain applications (Mail, TextEdit, OmniOutliner), while not in others (Safari, TeXShop, BBEdit, XCode)... If I log into another account on the same machine, the problem doesn't appear. This is why I thought it must be something within my account?

Helpful comments always welcome...

Thanks for the tip on cocoaSpell. Indeed, I still had an older version on my system, even though i wasn't using it. I've removed it and my punctuation is no longer double.

Whew!

Big sigh of relief here... last week I advised one of my clients to not upgrade to Panther at least until 10.3.1 was released, and they ignored me and told me to go ahead and do it anyway-- and scheduled me for tomorrow.

I still wish they'd just do a couple machines and see how things go for a week or two, instead of putting all their eggs in one basket. But we'll see.

double punctuation

I had the same double punctuation when I first upgraded to Panther 10.3. It was kind of tricky to track it down, since it only occurred in some applications. It also only occurred in one account on my machine, so I knew it wasn't a general system problem. After playing with preferences (no help), fonts and font sets (no help), I traced to cocoaSpell (placed in the Services folder in the Library folder of an individual account). Lesson: Keep multiple accounts---an administrator account for installing things, a user account (not an administrator) for everyday use, and a stripped down user account (a guest account?) where preferences and caches can be trashed at any time. Fast User Switching in Panther makes this even more convenient.

I also seam to be a bit hungrier. Hmmm, sounds buggy to me. should I go back to 10.3? Or are these hunger pains normal, people have also told of this thing called a 'sun' or something or another. anyway, back to my code...

its all good on my hackup box so it should be fine on all others. its a surprise my machine even runs. i have abused it to no end, and even have a cpu from a quicksilver on my Digital Audio. lots of other ocol stuff too, all is well

globe after the update

After the update, I now have a half-inch wide blue globe on my desktop. When clicked it does the same thing as the Expose F10 key. How do I get rid of it?

how precious!

So basically, i get the G5 and it starts working.. fast forward a week... FREEZING, NOISE, CRASHING, FANS SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL!!! I've taken the computer back in twice now and its still freezing... Apple says i have had 37 entries made on my case # regarding my computer and still i'm at square one... this is terrible... They replaced my powersupply because it was making this weezing noise but that only was a temp fix... seems like they don't know why my comp is freezing and they keep saying that it's a softwear issue.. the only problem with that theory is that it's crashed with several different applications... office X has had the most issues but others like IE have been crashing as well...

The same applications have been installed in a g4 pb and they work fine.. why don't they run on the g5!!! I've been a long time PC user and it took me a lot to finally switch over.. i used to talk highly of the mac machines but now i have a new story... here it goes...

I am Daniel... i was a PC user.. i sold macs at a mac retailer for 5 years to hundreds of customers... i make music, design websites, and dabble in video editing... after seeing all the ads and hearing wonderful stories... i NEED A MAC!!!

I am Daniel, i bought a mac... i want this mac to work.. this mac does not work.. i called apple support over 20 times.. this mac is still not working.. apple says that it is too late for an exchange... apple sent me extra ram to shut me up... apple did not fix my computer.. Apple says i have to bring the computer back in for repairs again.. I have spent over 4 weeks dealing with this mess and it still isn't fixed.. i feel like apple's test animal... try this, try that.. man.... JUST GIVE ME SOMETHING THAT WORKS!!!! reformat, reinstall, first aid, reinstall, uninstall, CRASH! ERRR...

I am Daniel, I'm on a mac forum... i hate my MAC.. i am going back to PC!

well sorry for ya buddy but if you are apple gold certified why are you calling the apple techs for help? does anyone smell a troll with just enough info to sound liek hes a real g5 owner? i am a certified tech and i would never call tech suppot at apple, becuase I can fix it myself BECAUSE I AM A TECH ALREADY, and i can also bring my mac in to any mac fixit shop because i know most of the guys and they are cool enough to let me use their facilities and use the required tools if there is a problem i dont have the tools to fix. if you really need help just post your email in here and ill get back to you. if you are a troll, that A$$ is mine

That's probably because Apple.com is for tech support help, not some lame switcher knock-off comedies. They rip off anything that isn't support related (hey, and some things that are!).

BTW, I'll take your G5 off your hands. I'll deal with Apple for the next year if necessary. No, no problem at all. I'll be glad to do it. I'll give you $50 for it. No, make it $100, the extra 50 for your troubles. Since its not working, it really has no value, so therefore you should be happy to get anything for it.

SMB seems fine

SMB networking seems great, but then, it worked great for me with 10.3 too. AFP sharing is where my real trouble is, and 10.3.1 doesn't help that at all. I can *usually* see my AFP volumes from the Network ball, but there seems to be no way to mount them onto the desktop. This works great with Windows SMB volumes, however. Other Macs with SMB sharing do not appear to be available at all.

Did you check the finder preference to show mounted network volumes on the desktop? It was checked off on my machine.

Loaded the update and now my finder runs like c***. When the machine is freshly booted, the finder doesn't load the menu bar stripe or menu labels but it does load the clock and battery meter. Then I get the colorwheel for about 1-2 minutes before the rest of the menu bar finally loads. Also, about every other bootup, the finder loads the menubar but does not show the desktop icons until I force-relaunch the finder once or twice. Dang.

This sounds like a case for Repair Permissions...
Or it could be a Finder pref file. Try to create a new user. Log in as that new user and see if the problems are still there. If they aren't then it is a problem with your installation. Might help to delete some pref files.

menu bug gone...

i was having a strange bug involving the date/time menu item and certain 3rd party menu items (namely MUMenu). date and time nor MM would launch most of the time. the bug seems to now be gone.
just a tad more responsive on my 1Ghz TiBook.

10.3.1 ate my hard drives

I just updated to 10.3.1, and disaster struck. I have 2 firewire400 drives (wiebetech ox911), under panther (10.3) there were no issues or problems. After the update i plugged in the drives, and *BAM* macos reported unreadable drive formats. In the first aid disk utility it's reporting bad b-tree node info on one drive and bad catalog information on the other. I'm so angry, as these drives contain(ed) my archive of the past 4+ years of video footage, and past 5+ years of photos which are now unrecoverable (300+ gb of data). I'm going to try to buy some other disk utility to see if they can repair them, but from what i read, they don't work either.
