Well,

Has anyone managed to successfully download this from the Archei site? There seems to be an infinite loop of entering an email address, to being taken back to the page to enter an email address. Since it won't accept the same email address twice, then no download.

Hmmmmm.

Tried time and time again but got nothing to download. I entered ten email addresses before giving up (one@mydomian.com ... ten@mydomain.com) and still no luck.

Beginner info on MacGimp?

I saw this offer and went to the MacGimp page to investigate. I would really like to investigate open source software like this and others, but have never installed anything of this type. So I went to the MacGimp page, and couldn't find a hint of an FAQ, or resources/installation info anywhere.

I'm not a novice in regards to using a Mac or with experience in OS X, but I am green when it comes to anything open source related like this -- e.g. X11, fink, gimp, open office, etc. But I'd really like to learn how to install and use them. Can anyone recommend some good primers online on how this all works?

Fink

Fink. Install fink. It has an installer program so It is brain dead easy. Then use Fink commander GUI that comes with it and find Gimp in that HUGE list of free Open Source programs.

Their Free Gimp. Simple and whatever. Also their is Film Gimp in there.

WinGimp.org, has always offered free downloads, now claims Archei is sponsoring downloads for a limited time, registered by Mat Caughron of Proteron.

XDarwin, selling freely downloadable software (which is does link to) for $99, Archei sponsoring blah blah blah, registered by Mat Caughron of Proteron.

Archei, registered by Mat Caughron (the only site not registered to his Proteron address). Collecting user information without a privacy policy (illegal in Cali!). Not linking to download site. Privacy policy, legal information, etc links exist in HTML source, commented out, don't go anywhere anyway.

I'll leave you to do your own math.

Don't bother....

...if you are not happy with a program that installs things in odd places and can be a pain to remove. There is no easy way to uninstall this for the normal mac user (ie someone not happy messing with the terminal).

I would use Fink

I would use Fink, but I don't like sucking down the packages over my dial-up at home.

For all the open source software I have installed at home, I've downloaded the source or a binary from the Windows machine at work. Then burned on a CD for bring home.

I wish there was a Fink frontend that ran on Windows. Then I could download the Fink packages at work, burn on a CD, then run Fink at home and point it to the CD. Can this be done?

MacGIMP install location

Dear MacNN Readers:

The installer places the gimp files in:
/opt/local/bin/

This is consistent with the OpenDarwin packaging system.
See: http://www.opendarwin.org/projects/darwinports/

This also enables you to install this separately from Fink. In other words, the MacGIMP installation will not interfere with a fink installation and vice versa.

MacGimp/Fink Conflict

I had no trouble downloading MacGimp but.....

The Install notes for the latest Fink install says that this version (of the fink installer) cannot be used if MacGimp is installed.

How do I uninstall MacGimp so that I can install fink so that I can then re-install MacGimp?

Mat says that MacGimp and Fink will not interfere with one another but the install notes say otherwise.

2 problems

Ok. So I have X11 installed and I downloaded the MacGIMP (I just gave them a totally phony name/address/email...what's the big deal?), and I installed.

Now how the h*** do I actually RUN it? I fire up X11 and type 'gimp' and I get "bash: gimp: command not found" Even if I cd into the Gimp directory, same error. I downloaded the docs, and there's nothing in there about how to actually start the program.

Problem 2: Fink. Every time I use Fink to download stuff, I get the same damn error message every time. Something like "Fink has detected an existing X11 installation and refuses to overwrite these files.....blah blah blah" So I wind up with an incomplete install AND it hoses my X11 install so it won't start again. WTF?

Christ, for the hours I've pissed away trying to get this stuff to work, it feels like I'm working on Windows...

To run MacGimp

1. Download it.
2. Unstuff it.
3. Run the installer.
4. Open Terminal while logged in as admin
5. Type: cd /opt/local/bin and hit return
6. Type: sudo ./gimp
7. Wait for MacGimp to finish configuring
8. Quit terminal
9. Lanch X11
10. In the X11 terminal, type ./gimp-1.2
There may be an easier way to do this, I am not a unix guy.

Ok, Ok, Ok,
I'm not a mac newbie but I do not have the balls to load up x11 freex86 whatever. I admit it. I am a wimp. So how the h*** do I get rid of all 50 mg of macGimp c*** off my system.
Please help

Ok, I type sudo ./gimp

and I get:

Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

and in X11 typing ./gimp-1.2

gives me:

./gimp-1.2: No such file or directory

Y'know...maybe I'll just pirate a copy of Photoshop...this isn't worth it.

Um...

"and in X11 typing ./gimp-1.2"
make sure you FIRST
cd /opt/local/bin
press return
then:
./gimp or ./gimp-1.2
If none of this works, run disk permissions, update your OS, try again.
Maybe re-install X11?
Don't b**** about free stuff.
Just my opinion.

Try MacGIMP Launcher!

If you don't want to deal with all that Terminal typin, try MacGIMP launcher.

It's a little app that runs a script that starts X11 and MacGIMP, good stuff!
