Mac users report MSN blackout
Several MacNN readers report that the MSN Messenger service recently stopped functioning on their Macintosh computers. Some users indicate that service abruptly stopped over a week ago. Microsoft has yet to update the client software, or provide those users without service with a solution. It is currently unclear if these problems are widespread or isolated.

eShox offers single-app commerce solution
eShox uses Apache and mySQL to offer a Mac OS X-based ecommerce solution with Web-based administration and reporting, real-time payment processing, a theme-based customzable interface, customer tracking/notification, and integration with most shipping companies for real-time quotes. Web administration allows the administrator to set preferences, update order status, modify customer information, track customer order totals, view product order statistics and print invoices and packing slips. It also offers support for multiple currencies, regional tax rates and product-specific tax rates.
mShox provides similar functionality but is specifically designed for the music industry with support for sample song tracks in QuickTime, MP3, AC3, RealPlayer, and WMP formats as well as tour info/dates and other features. Both products--each $400--are expected to ship on CD on January 2, 2003, but are available now for download. [pricing info added]
WorksWell offers DTP, drawing tools
WorksWell categorizes itself as a "drawing, DTP and reporting software" with functions for drawing (layering, grouping, zoom, etc.), charting, presentations, PDF Markup and extensive data merging (including iTunes and iPhoto data). The $100 document-creation tool is for Mac OS X onlly. DrawWell offers all of WorksWell's vector-based illustration tools (but not other functions) for $50, while ReportWell for myTunes has functions for creating CD labels. [WW, DW]
Apps: emulators, ecommerce apps, Font Pilot
Bruno Blondeau's Pod Manager 1.3 is an $8 shareware for extracting music files stored on your iPod. This new version features improved mp3 tag detection, better sorting for music files, and more help for cases when the iPod can't be recognized. The application is localized in English, French and Japanese. [227KB]
Conto 1.1.2 is a free application that allows you to keep track of your expenses and incomes on a monthly basis. It supports different currencies, number formats, date formats; strong encryption (requires GnuPG); support for storing any account-related information; full undo-redo capabilities; and histogram analysis. It only runs on Mac OS X. [299KB]
Frank Fenn's LogMaster 1.0 is a simple "giftware" ($3) utility for viewing system and other application logs. The Mac OS X utility only runs on Jaguar. [103KB]
WebCal 3.6 is an update to the $5 shareware OS X utility, which allows you to publish your calendar as HTML on the Web. It offers customization, supports recurring events, and can generate large calendars. Version 3.6 adds generation of an HTML file with automatic redirection to the current calendar and other bug fixes. [1.6MB]
Koingo's Font Pilot 1.1 adds the ability to view fonts that are not installed in your Fonts folder, a new search field, the ability to enable uninstalled fonts, scrollwheel support, preferences, and other enhancements to the $10 shareware font utility. [967KB]
Trailerpark QT 1.03 is a QuickTime multimedia list player, allowing easy access and organization of multiple video and other media files: "[It] is a blend of global floating windows, one-click contextual menu access, one-key control, and a plethora of display and playlist options." Richard Banister has updated RockNES 2.30, his Nintendo NES emulator and Boycott Advance v0.2.7, an update to the Nintendo GBA emulator--both updates bring the software in sync with the latest version and add support for joysticks under Mac OS X. ViBE 1.0b2 is an update his Virtual Boy emulator and ROM Organizer is a new utility for sorting emulator software on Mac OS X.
