Hewlett-Packard has released version 1.10 of its LaserJet printer drivers. HP LaserJet driver v1.10 is compadible with Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.
August Software today announced the delivery of free Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) SDKs for PowerPC and X86 based Linux systems available at OBDC Router.com. The new standards-based ODBCSDK eliminates the need for per-desktop database drivers and control panels on the Mac OS and Linux. The new ODBCSDK enables developers to build cross-platform applications and web services that access virtually any SQL database system including Oracle and SYBASE.
Pangea Software has released updates to two of its popular games. Otto Matic 1.0.1 includes several bug fixes and Cro-Mag Rally Update 2.02 fixes crash bugs in Mac OS X. Both games are included by Apple on new Macintosh systems.
A MacNN Reader notes that according to the Dutch site Webwereld, Apple will announce a new product at next month's MacWorld Expo that is "innovative, revolutionary and different." The article discusses the possibility of an LCD iMac; says this new product's impact will be 'enormous.'
The Omni Group today announced that it has created two new mailing lists for OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner users. The OmniGraffle-Users and OmniOutliner-Users lists are available today and will complement the already successful OmniWeb mailing list.
Toronto based Galleon Software is offering 'PowerTicker,' their desktop stock ticker application, for $40 ($10 dollars off the regular price). PowerTicker is a desktop stock ticker for the Macintosh that gathers information from a collection of online financial sites. Architosh has posted a short article dealing with 'Piranesi' for Mac OS X. Piranesi is a high-quality renderer for the AEC environment. Additionally, Architosh is scheduled to report on next-generation Power Macs for 2002 next Monday.
IOXperts has announced a licensing agreement with FirewireDirect to bundle a webcam driver to run FirewireDirect DV Webcam natively in Mac OS X. The deal will provide Mac OS X users the first native support of Firewire webcams; a $5 discount is available for all existing FirewireDirect DV webcam owners; retail price is $20.
Cameraid 1.2b3, Juri Munkki's $15 shareware digital camera utility, includes an updated manual, significant user interface changes, muchfaster browsing of large JPEG images at reduced sizes and batch processor enhancements. Version 1.2 is tentatively scheduled for release just before Christmas.
MacPlay announced today that Sacrifice for OS X and OS 9 has officially "gone gold" and is in production for a pre-holiday release. The 3D real-time strategy game allows "players to act as both commander and combatant over huge, real-time generated landscapes in single or multiplayer modes. Sacrifice serves up over 50 of the most fantastic creatures ever seen in interactive combat scenarios and offers versatile and imaginative spells that can be cast throughout the course of the game." Sources indicate that some early iPods could be rendered inoperative, if the battery was discharged completely:
"The new iPod software 1.02 update was designed to help manage low power situations, but in some cases, when using the older version of the software, if the iPod battery discharged completely, it may not turn on or charge at all (either via computer or the wall-charger). Apple is aware of the situation and is sending replacments to affected customers. Althernatively, customers can also trying popping the battery out and putting it back in (but that requires some amount of finaggling and is generally not recommended.)

Thoth 1.4.4 is an update to the $25 Carbonized shareware newsreader. Version 1.4.4 adds new preferences for news server settings, better image manipulation, and other enhancements.
PocketDock 2.3 adds an updated skin system (as well as 20 new skins), performance enhancements and bug fixes to the desktop utility for organizing and launching applications, documents, web links, and email addresses.
Conn McQuinn writes about an award given Apple's desktop G4:
"The latest issue of Presentations Magazine has their annual 'Standing Ovation' awards for outstanding products used by presentation professionals. While the awards for best laptops went to Gateway and IBM models (what *were* they thinking?), the best desktop award went to the Dual 800 processor G4. They say 'With dual 800MHz processors, a DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive, an NVidia GeForce2 graphics processing unit, two 400-MBps FireWire ports and as much as 80GB of hard-disk capacity, Apple's latest PowerMac G4 is a graphic designer's dream.' Sigh. Mine, too."
CyberDisc has released new (free) beta versions of NodeScan Client/Server 1.0b9 system for Mac OS and OS X, its Java-based client for chat, file sharing, and searching. The NodeScan Server now supports streaming Ogg Vorbis format audio files: "While not optimized for streaming across limited bandwidth connections, the current implementation is suitable for Local Area or other high speed networks." The application also has indexing and searching functions for locating music files and playlist management features. (Audio playback is not currently supported in the Classic version of NodeScan Client.)
The MySQL Edition of eSuite4X 2.0, now available, is based on MySQL 3.23.46 and includes graphical assistants to easily install and set up MySQL on OS X. the $100 package includes support for MyISAM and InnoDB tables (transaction support) to support real world applications: "All important files are directly accessible through the Finder (ie. for doing a cold backup of your databases or configuring the database server settings). Also included is the SQL4X Manager Pro to import existing data into MySQL tables, create and administer databases, tables, users and access privileges, browse through your tables, edit data and schedule backups."
A MacNN reader notes that divx.com now has released a native DivX 4.11 alpha player/decoder for the Mac. "...this is something we've all been waiting for quite sometime. Audio doesn't seem to work as of yet, but I think they're working on it. The package contains the codec for both Mac OS 9 and OS X."
Steve Jobs has been named one of America's 15 most "fascinating tycoons" in a recent Forbes survey. The poll used the following criteria to select its winners: television and radio mentions, press clips, Web hits and books written about them that currently are in print. Among the other executives and celebrities to make the list were Larry Ellison, Donald Trump, Ted Turner, and Bill Gates.
EBI has released EBI PDF AutoPrint, a helper application for Adobe Acrobat© 5, that allows users to have fully automated Postscript and PDF printing, for any printer. It can be configured with PDF 1.4 and Postcript level 3 compatible RIPs and uses Acrobat Distiller and Acrobat 5 to automatically initiate print outs to any printer. The Light version will watch a single folder, while the Standard version will watch any number of folders, and the Pro version will allow you to automatically switch printers based on updates to specific watched folders. Sonoluca has released its real-time animation software Klangfarben as a freeware "Public Player" version. The powerful realtime audio/video animation toolbox has a custom visual interface that can be used to manipulate movie and image files in realtime as well as compose filters, use an external video-in source via QuickTime components, use automatic beat-matching functonality, design network games, and render high resolution movies.
The Iconfactory has released its latest feeware icon collectionm, World of Aqua OS XMas, which contains festive hard drives, ornaments, and aqua snowflakes.
As noted yesterday, Apple has posted iTunes 2.03, for both OS X and Mac OS 9, which "offers greater control when synchronizing iTunes with the iPod by transferring only the checked songs in your library and playlists to your iPod. This version also adds support for the Rio One MP3 player from SONICblue, a tool for for correcting improperly encoded Unicode tags, and improved stability and performance," according to one reader.
