Gideon Softworks has released Get Info 0.7.5 (file atttribute editing utility), Snard 0.7 for OS X 10.1 only (dock-based launcher), and Dock-It 0.6 (adds drive/favorites bar dock and an optional shelf for file operations). The company also says it is "aware of the SSH Admin and iFTP icompatibilities with OS 10.1 and they will be fixed in the next release."
ArKaos has announced its new ArKaos Visualizer 1.5 for iTunes 1.1 (Mac OS 9 and OS X), Soundjam 2 and Audion 2, a free plug-in for MP3/media players that offers beat-matching artificial intelligence to synchronize visual projects created with ArKaos VJ 2.1 and VMP 2.1 with music. It ships with 11 visual files pre-loaded and now includes OS X support, multi effects support, AltiVec optimization, new effects (video feedback, larsen, filtering ), and new new waveform support.
Aladdin is shipping French and German versions of its OS X-native Spring Cleaning 4.0.1, its $55 suite of 15 system "cleaning utilities to help users safely and easily remove hard drive and Internet clutter to reclaim disk space and increase their Mac's performance." Version 4.0, released a few months ago for US English customers, offers an OS X native application, a CookieEditor, a Mail Cleaner, an AccessMonitor for finding files by their last access date, and a dual-tiered interface with Standard and Advanced Modes.

In a column for the Houton Chronicle, Bob Levitus compares the capabilities of Apple's video editing solutions to those of a design studio that would cost doxens of times more. Saying he was at first skeptical of Steve Jobs' claims, LeVitus writes "The Mac is the digital hub, just as he proclaimed it to be." LeVitus adds that while much of the same work can be done on Windows systems, it is not nearly as "easy or pretty."

QiPo v 1.4, a utility that generates previews from QuickTime movies, adds new native support for processing DV streams, the ability to preview/scan remote video files directly from the Internet, and a new QuickTime slideshow file format. A Carbon version is due out "soon after OS X v10.1 is released."
As anticipated last week, Corel today introduced Corel Graphics Suite 10 for Macintosh, which runs on OS X as well as well Mac OS 8/9. The suite includes CorelDRAW 10 for vector illustration, Corel PHOTO-PAINT 10 for painting/animation and Corel R.A.V.E for creating Flash animations.
Corel is introducing KPT effects as a Mac OS X compliant package under the "procreate" mantra at this week's Seybold expo. The collection of Adobe Photoshop compatible plug-ins will include effects for imitating liquid, adding lightning, tiling, and generating gradients. KPT effects will be available on stores shelves in October at the suggested retail price of US$199. Both Classic and OS X versions will be available.
Datalogics has announced that it will be bringing its DL Formatter variable print product line to the Macintosh platform. DL Formatter allows users to design templates for their 1-to-1 communication using Adobe InDesign or Adobe FrameMaker. The tool then merges the variable content with the template to generate a variety of personalized communications methods.
Extensis announced today at Seybold that its Suitcase font management solution will be available for Mac OS X on November 19, 2001. The OS X release will offer the ability to connect to a Suitcase Server and synchronize fonts and files, including graphics, photos and text files.Suitcase for Mac OS X will be available to all registered owners of Suitcase 10 at no additional charge.
Apple's Website has order information on the OS X 10.1 Update CD, which is available via mail order for $20 (to registered users of OS X) and for free at local retail stores. It officially goes on sale on Saturday, September 29th. New information is also available on OS X Server 10.1, which has "performance boosts, enhanced workstation management and software RAID support." The update is also free to registered users and can be ordered online for $20 (shipping & handling).
Apple today announced that more than 1,400 third-party applications are now available for Mac OS X v10.1, which includes "dramatically increased performance, a refined Aqua user interface, and unprecedented connectivity to popular digital peripherals like DV camcorders, MP3 players and digital cameras." New application include Palm Desktop for OS X: "Instant Palm Desktop takes on a new twist in Mac OS X — simply click and hold on an icon in the Dock to get fast access to Palm Desktop data, find contacts or create new records. We’ve also redesigned the look and feel for Mac OS X and improved data compatibility for better synchronization with Palm handhelds."
OS X Toolbar Buttons v1.1 are "simple canvas classes simulate Cocoa toolbars found in OS X, including the three different views. This revision includes speed optimizations and a tweaked UI to match the up-coming 10.1."
Mac OS X 10.2, code-named Jaguar, and an upgrade to Mac OS X Server, code-named Tigger are reportedly in the early stages of development, according to ZDNet. Jaguar, which will begin full-force development after the company releases three interim upgrades to OS X 10.1 (every six weeks), may ship in January at Macworld Expo SF 2002, according to the report. Tigger, Mac OS X Server, 10.1 will include performance improvements, new modules for the Apache Web serving software and a new Macintosh Manager.
This morning's Seybold Keynote, still in progress, was kicked off with an opening by Steve Jobs, while Phil Schiller continued the presentation. Mac OS X 10.1 is due in stores on Saturday. The first "major" update will be a free to registered owners and CDs will be available at authorized Apple dealers (Apple, however, will charge $20 for shipping and handling of CD updates.) Schiller and Ken Bereskin focused on the performance improvements of OS X 10.1 noting vastly improved application launching, more responsive windowing, improve copy speeds, and faster startup times as well as improvements to the Aqua interface, including a moveable dock (side or bottom), redesigned system preferences, and new system control panels. OS X 10.1 also offers support for DVD playback (and drag & drop write access to DVD-Rs), keyboard shortcuts, and a new "scale" effect (in addition to the "Genie" effect).
Schiller and other Apple product managers, Sal Soghoian (AppleScript), John Zimmerer (ColorSync), Mike Evangelist (iDVD) demonstrated various system components and technologies. AppleScript Studio, an advanced scripting environment for professionals, is due out and the end of year, while iDVD 2, announced at Macworld Expo New York, is due out in October.
Other demos of third-party applications included Excel X (Bereskin), GoLive for X (Adobe's Bryan Lamkin & Sam Hui), Lightwave, and Maya (Alias|Wavefront's Andrew Pearce). Office v.X was plugged by Schiller who said that it could demonstrated at Apple retail stores.
The New York Post is reporting that Apple's Senior Vice President Software Engineering Avie Tevanian may leave the company, although the story has yet to be confirmed.
The Canon EOS-1D, a new digital SLR camera, offers 4-megapixel resolution, continuous shooting speed of 8 fps for up to 21 consecutive frames at full resolution, and an "exceptionally strong dust and weather-resistant magnesium alloy body."
Minolta today introduced its Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite II film scanner. The dual-format, dual-interface (USB and FireWire), compact film scanner offers high-resolution 2,820 dpi scans with 16-bit A/D conversion and a 4.8 dynamic range The scanner includes its DiMAGE Scan Elite II driver software for "flexible scanning control," Minolta's Easy Scan Utility to automate the scanning process, and Adobe Photoshop Elements software. Microsoft today introduced its first wireless optical mouse: the Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer and new versions of its wired mouse products, IntelliMouse Explorer and IntelliMouse Optical as well as its IntelliPoint 2.0 driver software.
Intelli Innovations has released eMail Alert! 2.8, an update to its e-mail notification and management software. The update adds OS X 10.1 compatibility, improes Carbon compatibility, and includes a new "Skip" button inthe mail status window.
America Online has posted a new version of its AOL Instant Messenger 4.5.355 client, bringing compatibility with OS X 10.1.
Steve Jobs is expected to announce OS X 10.1 later today during a special satellite appearance by Steve Jobs during Apple VP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller's 9 am PDT keynote, as noted by osx.macnn.com early yesterday morning.
Microsoft will offer a preview version of Word X for Mac, from its Office v. X for Mac suite. The Word X Test Drive, expected as a download from its Mactopia Website, will offer a subset of the features planned for the full release in November: "Being that the Test Drive is beta code, there are some features that are not supported or have been removed to reduce file download size." The Word X Test Drive is designed to run exclusively on OS X 10.1 and features technologies such as Sheets, the Quartz 2-D Drawing Layer, and Aqua interface as well as new features such as Multi-selection and Clear Formatting. Update: Microsoft says the download will be available on Saturday, September 29 and not today, as previously announced. Update 8 pm ET: Microsoft has informed us that it has already posted the download, despite the its message earlier saying it would not do so until Saturday.
A Macworld UK article reports that "Quark sources have already confirmed that XPress 5.5 – a Mac OS X-native version – is in development [and] will support Multiple Undos - a feature long desired by XPress users."
Andy O'Meara has posted another build of the WhiteCap 4.1, his wireframe-based visualization plugin that features more than 130 effects in both windowed and fullscreen mode, a slideshow of effects, control over specific effects, and excellent expandability: "I've also been working with the folks at Panic Inc in regards to Audion for Mac OS X. Audion users will have to wait a couple days until Audion 2.6 is released to be able to run the WhiteCap and G-Force installer."
Turbo Squid has launched a new OS X version of its free software, Macintosh LT Client beta, which allows users to browse its online asset collection of over 75,000 3D models, motion capture files, textures and shaders. Artists can optionally host their work on the Turbo Squid system for free, maintain control of their work, and receive royalties monthly for the sale of their individual assets.
Eridanus today released Archer 1.0.3, an update to the free multimedia slide show player for OS X. It adds a Show Info option that displays image information in the upper left-hand corner of images and an indicator light for activity.
Chaotic Software has released MP3 Rage 3.8, which adds ISO 9660-compatible renaming and fixes a few minor problems in its $25 collection of MP3 tools that includes the ability edit ID3 tags, analyze MP3's, adjust their sound volume, export MP3 files to AIFF format for burning CD's, play MP3 files, catalog, organize, rename, find, and batch rename.
Vincent Jalby has released @-time 1.0 for Mac OS 8/9 and OS X, a simple, free application that displays local time and the time in four world cities as well as displays GMT (UTC) time and Internet (@) time.

P & L Software Ltd today announced the release of Mesa 3.0.4, an update to its Cocoa-based spreadsheet with features such as multiple worksheets, advanced functions, and charting. It adds the ability to save information in Microsoft Excel format as well as a new localised French language version. A demo restricts the work size, but offers all the features of the full $100 version (education licenses are $50).
SWIG 1.3.8 is an update to the software development tool that connects programs written in C, C++, and Objective-C with a variety of common scripting languages such as Perl, Python, Tcl/Tk, Ruby, Guile and MzScheme.
XDarwin 1.0a2, the second rootless test release of XFree86 for Darwin and OS X, is now available. It adds OS X 10.1 compatibility, multi-monitor support in Quartz modes (IOKit mode coming soon), the ability to use full screen Quartz with arbitrary bit depth and size, a new rootless mode that avoids the Aqua menu bar, and the bility to change the mouse button emulation modifiers.
Paul Nishikawa notes that Apple has quietly posted on its ftp site new Firmware Updates 4.19 for the Power Mac G4, G4 Cube, and slot-loading iMacs (a similar iBook Firmware update 4.1.7 was released in May, however, the 4.1.9 counter part for iBooks is not yet available on Apple's ftp site). The documentation reads:
Firmware Update 4.1.9 includes improvements to starting up Mac OS X from the local hard disk, FireWire target disk mode, network startup, gigabit networking (on systems with gigabit hardware), and system stability. This update also adds support for additional security options that allow the Open Firmware to be password-protected.
CXC's MacTella 1.3.4 is the latest release of the Mac version of the Gnutella file sharing client. The new release fixes problems with the multi-window search and a few other bugs.
Casey Common notes that New Line has released a new trailer for "Fellowship of the Ring" exclusively in QuickTime, after a previous trailer for the first movie in the trilogy was released exclusively in RealVideo.

Black Cat Systems has released several updates to its applications, including MultiMode 3.9.5, which adds improvements to FAX mode, as well as access to a database of over 10,000 airplane identifiers to ACARS mode to its application for amateur radio operators and radio hobbyists; Elmer 3.0.0 adds display of figures and pictures relevant to the test questions to the preparation utility for the ham radio written examination; and Sound Byte 2.0b1, which turns your Mac into a cart machine for playing sound recordings, including MP3, AIFF, WAV, and AU files.
Gefen is now shipping its $40 ex-tend-it DVImate adapter, with a DVI female connector at both ends, converts a DVI cable's male-to-male connector to a male-to-female connector, allowing users to use standard DVI cables to extend digital monitors and projectors short distances.
Mark/Space recently released a free update to its application for sending messages to numeric and alphanumeric pagers as well as GSM and PCS telephones, PageNOW 2.01, adding new modules for Colorado Mobile Paging and Ameritech Paging. A $50 "Lite" version is limited to 25 subscribers, an $80 personal version provides paging capability to 1 person from third-party applications, and a $200 "Server" allows paging of up to 5 people from other applications.
Quit CSM 2.2 is a Control Strip module that lets you quit applications without having to activate them. Version 2.2 now displays free memory (in addition to largest used block and memory in use) and can now quit applications that don't support AppleEvents. The $5 shareware is available in English, Japanese, German, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish.
