Late evening tech news: the FBI has put out a denial of service warning after a DDOS attack on the White House Web site last Friday; NEC's new $3,400 "light and thin" Versa Txi notebook packs a 750MHz Pentium III, a FireWire port, three USB ports, a 12.1-inch active-matrix screen, 128MB of RAM, and a 20GB drive in a 1.26" thick magensium case that weighs in under 4lbs; and Yahoo says it will begin charging for PC-to-phone calls through its messaging service.

Strange Flavour has released Bushfire 1.10, a new version of its popular $3 side-scrolling action game for Classic and Mac OS X that adds a save game feature and corrects resolution switching under Mac OS X. OmniWeb 4.0 final released

OmniWeb 4.0 final released

The Omni Group has shipped the final non-beta version of its popular $30 ($20 educational) web browser for Mac OS X, OmniWeb 4.0. The web browser features the full "Aqua" look and feel, color profiled images using ColorSync, a multithreaded architecture that takes advantage of symmetric multiprocessing, and more. The company promises constant updates and improvements as well as an OmniWeb 4.1 update this summer.

SoundJam MP ceasing publication

After axing OS X development last month, Casady & Greene has announced that it will cease publication of SoundJam MP and SoundJam MP Plus as of June 1, 2001 at the request of the developers. The company says it will continue to offer technical support to its customers, and mentions that the SoundJam MP development team is now working for Apple on their own iTunes software.

Casady & Greene's Grammarian 2.1.3 is a new version of the company's proofreading utility that can interactively check your grammar as you type. The new version features a new grammar engine that includes a 140,000 word base of thematic classifications, the ability to check for more Improper Word Usage errors, added support for Microsoft Office Entourage and Adobe Photoshop 6.0, and other minor fixes.

Tech: AMD Barton; Dell, 3Com axe thousands

Evening tech news: AMD's successor to the Athlon processor, expected to ship in the second half of the year, has been named Barton; Dell will cut another 3,000 to 4,000 jobs in an effort to cut costs (the company slashed 1,700 jobs in February); and 3Com has announced it is cutting 3,000 jobs, or 30 percent of its workforce.

Authoring Support 1.1 released separately

Apple Authoring Support 1.1, which was first released last week via Software Update, is now available for separate download. The update "adds support for new drives, and increases reliability for your CD burning apps like iTunes and Disc Burner." The software also includes a new version of Apple System Profiler that will tell whether a CD-RW drive is compatible with iTunes/Disc Burner.

Apple has confirmed that it will be launching a series of Apple Retail Stores, according to several media outlets that report receiving invitations to the store. Michael diCanio notes that LaCie is delaying shipment of its USB and FireWire PocketDrive CD-RWs due to a shortage of certain components used in the drive. "Unfortunately, we have not yet received the PocketDrives from our headquarters in France," said the LaCie representative. "The earliest ETA we have is the end of May."

Charter One Financial has launched a new program where the bank will make a contribution to the 'One-Click' fund each time a Charter One customer signs up to bank online. Derek Wong notes that volume adjustments made to individuals tracks with iTunes do not carry over to burned CDs. "I tried to balance the relative volume of the tracks [with iTunes] but kept getting unsatisfactory results. Finally, I opened up the audio files in the resulting discs burned using different volume settings in SoundEdit. To my surprise the resulting files' wave amplitudes are identical."
