Late last week, Bungie Community Guy Matt Soell released his weekly update on the company's upcoming first-person shooter for the XBox, Mac and PC, Halo. Cornered Rat Software's Michael "Gryf" Weber has provided a "State of the Beta" with the latest information on the development of massively multiplayer online war combat game, World War II Online. "We now have grass general ground clutter in there that provides concealment for the troopers. It is incredible how easy it is to lose a trooper in the grass now."
MGON has published an interview with Ion Storm's Warren Spector, acclaimed producer on Deus Ex and many other game projects. The interview talks with Spector about gaming in general, why he plays and creates videogames and whether he considers himself an artist or not. "If thinking of oneself as an artist makes it harder to think about game design," said Spector, "if it stops us from getting beyond meaningless words like 'fun' and 'interactive' that seem to dominate discussions of games and gaming, count me out!"
Mac Deus Ex has released its Deus Ex Map Pack 3, offering 8 new maps for the multiplayer version of Deus Ex. Among the new maps are three featuring "The Matrix"-style physics that allow players to jump very high and far in slow motion.

Scott Gruby, the original author of NotifyMail, today announced that he has acquired all the rights to his application and has released an update to his instant email notification system that works in conjunction with a user's mail server for instant notification. MetaCommunications announced that electronic job tracking, costing, and billing software, Job Manager 3.01, will include integration with Intuit's Quickbooks and MYOB’s Accounting Plus accounting software systems with support for other packages by the second quarter of 2001. Runtime Labs is soliciting beta testers for version 2.0 of MacSQL Monitor, slated for release in the first week of May. The $40 shareware allows users to interact with MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, JDBC, and ODBC databases and view database schema, issue queries, and import/export data from SQL databases. Version 2.0 will allow spreadsheet like viewing/editing of remote data, support for additional databases (Microsoft SQL Server, FrontBase, and OpenBase), and automatic generation of PHP, Perl, or JSP pages/scripts to handle simple web-database interaction.
Unlined Charcoal X 1.1.2 is the latest release of the package that will attempt to replace the Aqua interface in OS X with a more Platinum-type look. Version 1.1.2 removes the lines in the Login screens and lines on the installer screen.

Adobe today announced that it has begun shipping both Acrobat 5.0 and AfterEffects 5.0. Acrobat 5 sells for $250 ($100 upgrade) while AfterEffects 5 carries a $650 price tag ($200 upgrade). The company also introduced the Adobe Streaming Media Collection (Premiere 6, After Effects 5, LiveMotion, and GoLive 5 for $1000) and the Adobe Digital Video Collection (Premiere 6, After Effects 5, Photoshop 6, and Illustrator 9 for $1200).
MenuStrip 1.5 is a new version of the $12 shareware utility for Mac OS X that allows quick access to frequently used settings, such as the computer volume, monitor resolution, and color depth, right from the OS X menu bar.
Extensis has announced that it has added FTP support to Preflight Online. The new functionality allows subscribers to preflight, collect, and compress all the files needed for a print job, and then send them directly to their printer's FTP server, service bureau, or publisher using a Web browser.
Fuji today announced that it has begun shipping its new FinePix 2300 and FinePix 6800 digital cameras. The FinePix 2300, for $280, is a compact 2.1 megapixel camera that features a 2.5x digital zoom . The FinePix 6800, meanwhile, sells for $900 and features a 3.3 megapixel CCD with the capability to create 6 megapixel images, as well as a 3x optical zoom and 4.4x digital zoom (13.2x total zoom), and the ability to capture 320x240 motion JPEG movies.
Canon has begun shipping the S600, a $200 USB color inkjet printer that can print at resolutions up to 2400x1200 dpi with speeds up to 15 ppm for black text or 90 seconds for an 8x10-inch color photo. The printer ships with ImageBrowser and PhotoStitch software.
LaCie has introduced a 7200 RPM, 75GB version of its full-height FireWire hard drive. The drive sells for $580.

Apple's stock continues to hover around $20 per share, pending the fiscal results for Q2 due later this month. Meanwhile, investment analysis firm Wit SoundView says it is doubtful that Apple will achieve its goal of a "small profit," and has lowered its revenue estimates for the rest of the year.
Readers report that running the command line "sudo update_prebinding -root /" in the Terminal.app utility under Mac OS X significantly enhances performance. Apparently, this same process occurs when users install the "Developer Tools" included with OS X, and deals with the manner in which applications access information on the disk. (The command reports numerous errors if the Developer Tools are not installed; this may not improve performance after the installation of the unofficial 4L7 or 4L5 updates, which are rumored to have similar optimization routines.)
Total Training has unveiled a new video compilation entitled "Creating Web Graphics with Adobe Photoshop 6." The series focuses on problems that graphic designers have when putting images on the Internet. Andrew Martin writes about a bug in the "final" version Tenon's recently released Xtools 1.0, an Aqua X Window Server for OS X:
"For many users, their installer deletes much of the hard drive (including many of the BSD directories and the all important /Applications directory). They blame the Apple installer for the problem, which may or may not be the case. Nonetheless, they are refusing to post a warning on their website. I think the Macintosh community should know that this installer (not in its "final" version) has caused many users to lose their entire systems."
Josh Hague writes that Koingo Software's Alarm Clock Pro 3.0.5 has been updated to address a crash "in the last version that would happen to everyone who tried to play a beep as an alarm.
A new SETI@home Client v3.03 for OS X was made available late last week. The package requires a restart and includes a command-line utilty for removing SETI@Home components, if required. (Readers are encouraged to join Team MacNN.)
Following-up on a note last week about an upcoming LaCie CD-RW, Nathan Finch writes that APS Tech is already selling a similar FireWire/USB combo CD-RW for $330. The APS CD-RW 16x10x40 FireWire Plus Pro2 ships with FireWire Cable, USB Cable, and Toast OEM 4.12.

Over the weekend we noted DIMMCheck and DIMM First Aid utilities, which help identify RAM modules that will be affected by Apple's firmware updates and allow users to regain unrecognized RAM after applying the update. Other updates included Michael Dell's comments on the Apple's future and reduced GeForce 3 pricing at the Apple Store. Updates include Apple's Macintosh Manager 1.4.1, Search & Rescue 3.0 data recovery utility, VPC Helper 3.0, Eudora 5.1fc1, mimio 1.5 software, and PowerLogix's Prolifer X ulility (noted on osx.macnn.com).
