Basis Peak fitness tracker launches with touchscreen controls

Basis, producers of the B1 fitness tracker, has unveiled its first wearable device since its acquisition by Intel. The Peak is a fitness and sleep tracker which builds upon its predecessor by replacing the collection of buttons and display with a larger touch-enabled screen, as well as upgrading the rear-mounted heart rate tracker to the point where Basis suggests it could replace a chest-strap monitor completely.

Apple Pay, iPad with Touch ID references found in iOS 8.1 beta

Inside the just-released iOS 8.1 beta for developers are various clues to future Apple products and services, according to developer Hamza Sood. He uncovered settings menus for Apple Pay as well as references to an iPad that includes Touch ID -- both expected additions in forthcoming versions of iOS and iPad models, respectively. A further find of Apple Pay for the iPad appears to offer only online-buying or in-app purchasing support.

Update: iPhone 6, 6 Plus approved in China, debuts October 17 [u]

[Update: Apple official announcement reveals China debut of iPhone 6, 6 Plus on October 17] The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have now finally been cleared by the country's regulatory agency for sale in China, and will formally debut on October 17, Apple says. According to Bloomberg, the holdup was apparently over some privacy concerns brought up by Chinese authorities. The company agreed to make some changes, which may or may not be included in the forthcoming iOS 8.1 beta, and received the clearance to use Chinese LTE and 3G networks.

Apple-owned Beats sues man claiming to be brand co-founder

According to new court filings, Apple-owned Beats is suing Roam and Jibe Audio founder Steven Lamar for false advertisements and unfair competition after Lamar posted numerous times on social media and his own company's website that he was a "co-founder" of Beats alongside Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. While Lamar does have a legitimate connection to the headphone maker, and collects a royalty on certain models of Beats headphones, Beats says in its filing that Lamar has "never had any ownership interest" in the audio products company.

Bug in iOS 8 can cause iCloud Drive erasure, report warns

A newly-discovered bug in the "Reset All Settings" control in iOS 8 can cause documents stored in the new iCloud Drive to be permanently deleted. The feature is not recommended to be upgraded to until OS X Yosemite has been officially released -- which is expected to happen sometime next month -- but some iOS 8 users who have upgraded prematurely will be at risk of losing files, such as iWork documents stored in the cloud, if they use the "Reset All Settings" troubleshooting feature.

Apple releases fix for 'Shellshock' Unix flaw

Although nearly all Mac users are unaffected by the issue Apple has made good on its word to quickly fix a serious security flaw in bash, a Unix shell that comes as part of OS X. Apple acknowledged the problem on Friday, and today released OS X bash update 1.0 for OS X Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8) and Mavericks (10.9). The flaw, known as "Shellshock," could potentially allow users who have set up advanced Unix services that interact with the web to be vulnerable to remote intrusion.

Video shows two kids deliberately bending iPhones at Apple Store

A new video circulating on the Internet shows two kids -- identifying themselves as Kylie and Danny -- going into an Apple Store and trying to bend the iPhone 6 Plus. The pair succeed several times, causing the phones' metal frames to warp and pop out their displays. Thousands of dollars' worth of hardware is believed to have been damaged, but Kylie suggests that "it's Apple fault" for poor design.

The information has also reportedly been verified through website analytics, showing visits by devices with the firmware. Hits from v8.1 devices are said to have registered before 8.0 launched on September 17, but 8.2 and 8.3 traffic only began escalating post-launch.

CloudFlare rolls out free SSL website encryption to all users

CloudFlare is pushing its users toward security in a good way, as it is adding secure socket layer (SSL) encryption to all of its customer accounts starting today. Where the company says that only around two million sites supported encrypted connections previously, CloudFlare believes it will double that number by the end of the day. Colette, Apple to hold Apple Watch event on September 30

Apple and a Parisian fashion boutique, Colette, are planning a "one day only experience" on September 30, according to the latter's website. The event will run from 11AM to 7PM local time at Colette's storefront on Rue Saint-Honoré. Although neither company has said so explicitly, it appears to involve the Apple Watch, since Apple has adopted a fashion angle to marketing the product and the logo for the event resembles the Watch's homescreen.

Rumor has 27-inch Retina iMac announcement in October

Apple is planning to unveil a 27-inch iMac with a 5120x2880 Retina display at its October press event, a new report claims -- citing an anonymous source. The computer will allegedly make a switch from Nvidia video cards to AMD, and offer a 4GHz Intel i7-4790K Haswell CPU as one configuration option. The 21.5-inch iMac isn't expected to make the jump to Retina graphics, at least not until Intel Broadwell processors launch -- which is most likely in early 2015.

Apple pulls Launcher from App Store for 'misuse' of iOS 8 widgets

Apple has removed an app called Launcher from the App Store, citing "misuse" of iOS 8 Notification Center widgets, says developer Cromulent Labs. The app lets users create create shortcuts for various tasks, such as calling a specific person via phone or FaceTime, navigating to a location, or simply opening an app. These shortcuts then appear in a widget.

One such developer that took to crowdfunding was Larian Studios, seeking to fund the next entry in the Divinity franchise, Divinity: Original Sin. But does Larian's prequel to Divine Divinity create a rich, enjoyable world for new and old players, or would it be too much to hope for the game to continue the RPG tradition?

China to begin iPhone 6 sales on October 10, reports say

While it is currently possible to legally buy an iPhone 6 in some parts of the regional "Greater China" area (such as Hong Kong or Taiwan) the country of China itself -- which manufactures and assembles the new iPhones - ironically does not yet offer them for sale, due to a cumbersome regulatory process. This may finally be changing, as various reports out of the region indicated that both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will finally debut in China on Friday, October 10.

AT&T doubles data caps on shared data plans until October 31

The never ending race for data cap superiority continues, AT&T has announced a limited-time offer that increases the data for its Mobile Share Value plans. Beginning today, AT&T is doubling the data included in the plans starting at the 15GB level. Where a 30GB plan was previously $225 a month, AT&T is now offering it for $130 until October 31.

Yahoo trims away more fat, three services shutting down before 2015

In the last two years, Yahoo has made a large number of changes to its core business, acquiring more than 40 companies to bolster various division of the company or open new areas of business. However, the company also ended more than 60 products in order to refine its vision since coming under the leadership of CEO Marissa Mayer. To that effect, Yahoo states three other products are coming to the end of their lives, as Yahoo Education, Directory and Qwiki will be closing down before 2015.

Featuring a food database of over 4 million entries, users can log and track what they eat and how much they exercise as part of maintaining a fitness regimen. MyFitnessPal v.5.6.6 allows users to add meal summaries logged to HealthKit by automatically sharing meal data with HealthKit-connected apps. Similarly, weight data and exercise entries can be synced between HealthKit and MyFitnessPal. Bug fixes regarding login issues have been resolved in the latest update. Berlin, Hamburg issue new shutdown orders for Uber ride-sharing app

In the latest back-and-forth between Uber and the German courts, judges in Berlin and Hamburg have upheld service bans against the ride-sharing service. Rulings from both courts held that similar to New York City's issue with Lyft, Uber's drivers lacked proper licensure, which would allow them to legally charge passengers for rides.

Consumer Reports: iPhone 6 'bending' controversy overblown

Adding to new suspicions that some of the "iPhone 6 Plus easily bends" videos appearing on the web may have been staged, Consumer Reports has now weighed in with the results of its own independent testing that largely refutes the claims that the phones can bend easily. After testing both models of new iPhone, as well as some other smartphones and phablets, the lab found that while the new iPhones were indeed less resilient than the iPhone 5 or Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, the HTC One (M8) is actually the most prone to deformation.

Analysts raising price targets for AAPL on sales strength, China debut

After falling four percent on Thursday, Apple's stock closed out the week by bouncing back and regaining more than half the drop as Wall Street reacted positively to the company's refutation of the "bending" controversy. Some new questions are being raised about the original video that started the kerfuffle, as careful observation reveals that the video was edited (and the reported noted in the video that his iPhone 6 was already slightly bent before demonstrating the flaw). Investment firms Stifel Nicolaus and BMO Capital Markets have both raised their target prices for AAPL.
